The Citroen C4 2023 belongs in the middle of a Dubai week: the supermarket run, the office car park, the evening drive out to a friend's building where the ramp is steeper than it looks. We rent it in Dubai to drivers from 18, with a no-deposit option, which matters because most desks in this city won't hand a car to anyone under 21. What the C4 is not, despite how the listing reads, is a proper SUV. It's a hatchback riding a little taller than usual, tuned softer than almost anything else at this money, and that trade decides whether it suits you.
Sit in one and the seating position is only marginally higher than a normal hatch. Ground clearance is 156 mm, which clears speed bumps and mall ramps without a scrape but is nowhere near what soft sand or a rough track needs. Treat it as a road car and you'll be fine. Treat it as a small 4x4 and you'll be waiting for a tow.
What Citroen actually spent the money on is the suspension. The dampers use progressive hydraulic cushions that let the wheel travel further before anything firms up, so the car floats over the expansion joints and patched tarmac that make firmer European hatches jiggle. On a long crawl down a congested road this is the difference between arriving relaxed and arriving irritated. It's the one genuine reason to pick this car over a Golf or an MG.
The cost is body roll. Take a fast roundabout or a sharp lane change and the C4 leans and takes a moment to settle, and the steering stays light and vague through all of it. That never bothers anyone doing errands. It does bother drivers who like a car that feels tied down.
The boot holds 380 litres, so two large suitcases go in for an airport pickup, or one big case with a couple of soft bags and room to spare. Drop the rear seats and you have roughly 1,250 litres, which is enough for a flat-pack or a bike with the front wheel off. Rear legroom is decent for the class thanks to a 2,670 mm wheelbase, though the sloping roofline leaves a tall adult in the back with less headroom than the exterior suggests. Four adults plus everyone's luggage is where it runs out. Two adults and two kids with a week of shopping is comfortable, and that's the honest line.
At 4.36 metres long and 1.8 metres wide it slides into multi-storey bays and older Marina parking without a three-point shuffle. The light steering that costs you feel on a fast road pays you back on every tight ramp and U-turn.
The engine is a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder making 155 hp and 240 Nm, driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic. Three cylinders sounds thin on paper, and there's a faint thrum at idle, but the turbo does the work low down and the car pulls away from lights briskly enough to hold its own in city traffic.
On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into a quiet cruise, and there's enough in reserve to complete an overtake without planning it a kilometre ahead. Push past about 120 and the wind noise builds and the softness starts to feel floaty in crosswinds, so it's a car that prefers to sit in the flow rather than lead it. Airport runs to DXB or DWC are undemanding. The gearbox is smooth in stop-and-go and doesn't hunt between ratios the way some small automatics do.
One practical note. Citroen has a smaller service network here than Toyota or Nissan, and most renters have never driven one. Nothing about the C4 is strange to operate, but if you want a car your family already knows how to work, this isn't the obvious pick.
Every rental decision in July comes down to how quickly a parked car becomes bearable. The C4 has automatic climate control with strong front vents, and with the fan up and the windows cracked for the first thirty seconds it pulls a baked cabin down to comfortable in a few minutes. There are no dedicated rear vents, so passengers in the back wait a little longer on a 45 degree afternoon. Park in shade where you can. It's a competent everyday system rather than a luxury one, which is what you should expect at this price.
Claimed economy is about 5.6 litres per 100 km, roughly 17.8 km per litre. Real Dubai driving with the AC working hard and constant stop-start will land you nearer 7, and on a 50-litre tank that still means one fill covers most of a normal week. Fuel is cheap here, so the small engine saves you less than it would elsewhere. The comfort is the reason to take it, not the economy.
Your rental includes 300 km a day, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5 each, which is generous unless you're doing a daily Abu Dhabi commute. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are yours to pay. Seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit before delivery.

Rent the C4 if your week is mostly city driving with one or two passengers and a couple of cases, and if a settled, quiet ride matters more to you than sharp handling. For long stints in traffic it's one of the more pleasant cars you can rent at this level, and we can have it at your door in one to two hours.
Skip it if you need genuine SUV height for the view or the load lip, if you regularly carry four adults with full luggage, or if you want a car that feels eager on a fast road. A compact sedan gives you a bigger boot for the same money, and a proper crossover gives you the ride height the C4's styling only hints at. Take the C4 for the ride quality, or take something else.
