This is the Trax most people don't realise they can get: the Chevrolet Trax 2024 in all-wheel drive, with 140 hp instead of the usual front-driven base car. We rent it in Dubai from age 18 and deliver it to your door in one to two hours. It's a compact five-seat SUV in white, and the AWD is the whole reason to pick this one over the cheaper version. If you want a small, easy-to-park crossover with a bit more grip in the wet and more shove for cross-emirate runs, this is the variant worth paying for. The catch is that you trade some fuel economy for it, and it's still not a desert tool. This page is about whether that trade is right for your week.
The 1.4-litre turbo here makes 140 hp and drives all four wheels through an automatic, and the difference shows up in two places. The first is traction. On a wet roundabout after one of Dubai's rare downpours, or pulling out of a loose gravel car park, the AWD finds grip the front-drive Trax can scrabble for. The second is pace. The extra power gives it more in reserve for a loaded overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road or a confident merge onto the E11 with the car full. It still isn't fast, but it never feels caught out the way the base car can when you ask for everything at once. For a renter doing longer highway stints or driving in mixed conditions, that headroom is the point.

Worth saying plainly: all-wheel drive here is for grip and stability, not dunes. With 158 mm of clearance and road tyres, this is a crossover that copes with a wet road and a gravel track, not soft sand or a rocky wadi. If your plan is real off-roading or a desert camp, you want a proper 4x4 with low range and far more ground under it. The Trax AWD is sure-footed on the tarmac and the odd loose surface, and that's where its talents end.
The cargo numbers don't change with the drivetrain. You get around 356 litres behind the rear seats, enough for a large suitcase plus a couple of soft bags, which suits a couple's airport pickup. Fold the 60/40 bench and the space opens to roughly 1370 litres for a bigger load or one person's worth of gear. Four adults each with a full-size case is still a stretch, and at that point a larger SUV makes more sense. The Trax is built for one or two people who pack sensibly.
The AWD car is the same compact size as any other Trax, so it's just as easy to live with in the city. At 4248 mm long it slots into tight multi-storey bays without fuss, takes the steep Marina and mall ramps cleanly, and makes U-turns feel relaxed. The high seating gives a clear view of the corners. For everyday Dubai driving, where parking is half the battle, the small footprint matters as much as the extra traction.
Dubai summers run well past 45 degrees, so how fast the AC recovers a parked cabin is a real concern. The Trax's small interior works in its favour. There's less volume to cool, so the temperature drops quickly once you're moving and the front vents are strong. Open the windows for the first stretch to dump the trapped heat and it settles within a few minutes. For one or two up front it copes with the heat comfortably.
The AWD system adds weight and drag, so this Trax uses a little more fuel than the front-drive car, though the 53-litre tank still gives a sensible week of city range. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are charged to you, and children under four need a child seat by law. On the road it cruises calmly at motorway speeds, with road noise climbing at the top end as refinement matches the price.
Rent the Chevrolet Trax 2024 AWD if you want a small, easy-to-park SUV with a bit more grip and pace than the base car, and you do enough highway or mixed-condition driving to use it. The all-wheel drive earns its keep on wet roads and loose surfaces, and the extra power takes the strain out of a loaded overtake.
If your driving is purely city errands and you're watching the fuel bill, the front-drive 115 hp Trax does the same daily job for less. And if you actually need to go off the tarmac, this isn't the car for that. Choose the AWD when the extra security on the road is worth a slightly higher running cost, and skip it when it isn't.
