Chevrolet already rents a seven-seat crossover in Dubai, the Captiva. The Chevrolet Trailblazer 2021 sits alongside it in the same range, and it isn't a stripped-down Captiva. It's a genuinely smaller car, built around two rows instead of three, shorter and narrower everywhere you'd measure it. The engine, and how it drives

On paper that's more power than the Captiva's own 1.5-litre engine manages, and you feel it in normal driving. Around town the Trailblazer pulls away from a standstill without hesitation, and merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road doesn't ask for much planning. It won't chirp the tyres and it isn't a car you rent to be quick, but for a small turbo three-cylinder in a compact crossover, it carries its own weight better than most rivals at this price.

The CVT is tuned for smoothness rather than sport, which suits the way most people actually drive here: stop-and-go traffic, roundabouts, the crawl into a mall car park. At 178 mm the ground clearance handles speed bumps and steep multi-storey ramps cleanly, but this is a front-wheel-drive crossover on road tyres. Keep it on tarmac. It isn't built for Hatta trails or soft sand, and nothing about the badge or the ride height changes that.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

The Trailblazer seats five, not seven, and it's worth saying plainly because a couple of listings elsewhere get this wrong. There's no third row to fold away or work around, which actually helps day to day: the boot behind the rear seats holds about 716 litres, more usable space than the Captiva offers with its third row in place. Two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags go in without any Tetris, which makes it a straightforward pick for a DXB or DWC run for two or three people. Fold the rear seats and the load area opens up to around 1,541 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a supermarket-scale shop.

The back seat fits two adults properly for a normal trip across town, with a third rider workable for a short hop rather than a long one. Up front the seating position sits higher than a hatchback but the cabin itself is compact, at 4,407 mm long and 1,808 mm wide against the Captiva's 4,737 x 1,890 mm. That smaller footprint is the payoff in a Marina tower or a tight mall bay, where the Captiva's extra length starts to matter.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

Chevrolet's own combined figure sits near 13 km/L, which is a lab number from a mild climate and light throttle. Run the AC hard through a Dubai summer with the usual stop-start traffic and something closer to 9 or 10 km/L is the realistic number to plan around. The 50-litre tank still stretches to roughly a week of ordinary errands and school runs before it needs a refill, and fuel here stays cheap enough that this rarely decides the budget.

The number that does decide the budget is the mileage cap. You get 250 km a day included, which covers city life comfortably, and anything past that runs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a full day out toward Hatta and back is worth adding up first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, same as on every car in the fleet, and a daily commute on Sheikh Zayed Road adds those toll gates up faster than people expect.

Heat is where the smaller cabin actually helps. There's less air to chill than in the three-row Captiva, so the Trailblazer's front vents pull the cabin down to comfortable faster after it's been sitting in a hot car park. Get it running for a couple of minutes before you climb back in on the worst afternoons, and park in shade where you can. It's a compact crossover's climate system, not a luxury one, but it copes with a Dubai summer honestly.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Trailblazer if you're a couple or a small family who wants SUV height, a proper boot, and running costs that undercut the bigger Chevrolet in the same fleet. It handles the school run, the weekly shop, and an airport pickup for two or three people without asking you to fold anything away or plan around a missing seat.

Size up if you regularly carry more than three passengers or want the flexibility of a third row for visiting family, in which case the Captiva or a larger SUV is the better booking. And if the plan involves desert tracks or Hatta's dirt roads, this is the wrong car regardless of how it looks. It's front-wheel drive on 178 mm of clearance, built for the city it's rented in.
