Reverse into a tight Marina tower bay in a full-size SUV and you know the routine: fold the mirrors in, inch forward twice, hope the car beside you hasn't parked over the line. The Chevrolet Groove 2025 skips most of that. We rent it in Dubai with doorstep delivery in one to two hours, and its small footprint is the real reason people book it over a bigger SUV, since it drops into a compact mall space that a Tucson or a Santa Fe has to work for. This page settles one thing: whether that small SUV footprint is enough car for your week, or whether you actually need the room a bigger one buys.
The Groove runs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four making 105 hp, paired with a CVT automatic that only ever drives the front wheels. Around town that's the right amount of engine. It pulls away from the lights without hesitation and holds pace with traffic on Al Wasl Road or Jumeirah Beach Road without complaint. Ask it for a confident overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road with four aboard and the ceiling shows itself, because there's no turbo to lean on and the CVT lets the revs climb and hold while the car gathers speed. Above 100 km/h it runs short on urgency, which makes this a car you plan overtakes with rather than one you throw into a gap.
Where the Groove earns its keep is the low-speed stuff. At 4.22 metres long and 1.74 metres wide, it turns into a Marina tower bay or a mall multi-storey slot that a full-size SUV has to fight for, and a U-turn on a tight service road stays a single move instead of a three-point shuffle. The 160 mm of ground clearance takes a speed bump or a steep basement ramp at a normal pace instead of crawling over it, and it clears the lip on most mall entrances without a scrape. Don't read that clearance as real capability off road, though. This is a front-wheel-drive car on road tyres, built for tarmac and speed bumps, not Hatta trails or soft sand.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Power | 105 hp |
| Fuel economy | about 6.5 L/100km official combined |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Range | roughly 500 km in city use |
| Boot | about 320 litres, up to 1,120 litres with rear seats folded |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,220 x 1,740 x 1,615 mm |
| Ground clearance | 160 mm |
| Colour | White |
The boot holds about 320 litres with the rear seats up, which is one large suitcase and a soft bag or two, the kind of load a DXB or DWC run for one or two people actually produces. Try to fit a third case for a longer trip and you'll be strapping it across the back seat instead. Fold the rear bench and the space opens to roughly 1,120 litres, enough for a flatpack wardrobe or a bike with the front wheel off.
The back seat is built for two adults, not three, on anything longer than a short hop across town. Two adults and two kids across the back for the school run work fine, and three children abreast is manageable for a while. Push a fourth adult in there for an airport run with everyone's cases loaded and both the seat and the boot run out of room at the same time, which is the honest ceiling of a car this size. Up front, the raised seating gives the two occupants there the higher view that sells people on a crossover shape over a hatchback in the first place.
Fuel is where the Groove earns its keep every day, not just at the pump. Official combined economy is about 6.5 litres per 100 km, and Dubai's stop-start traffic with the AC working flat out pushes that closer to 8 or 9 in practice. The 45-litre tank still buys roughly 500 km of city range, so a normal week of commuting and errands means one trip to the pump, maybe two if you're driving in from the outer suburbs daily.
The mileage allowance is 250 km a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. For city driving, mall runs and the odd airport pickup that daily figure is generous. Stack a couple of long days out toward Al Ain or Hatta into the same rental and you'll want to keep an eye on the odometer, because the overage adds up faster than the fuel does. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, as with every car we hand over, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys, worth checking before you book if you're younger.
Heat is the other real cost, and here the Groove's compact cabin works in your favour. There's less air to cool than in a bigger SUV, so the front vents pull a car that's been sitting in a Dubai car park down to comfortable within a few minutes of climbing back in. There are no rear vents on this generation, so the back row cools more slowly, relying on air pushed through from the front. That's fine for one passenger behind, a bit slower to reach a full back seat of three on the hottest afternoons. Park in shade when you can and it stops being a problem. The cabin plastics are hard and clearly built to a price, but everything is screwed together tightly enough to live with for a week or a month.
Rent the Groove if you want SUV height and an SUV's ease around town without paying for a bigger footprint you don't actually need. One or two people doing the daily commute, weekend malls and an occasional airport pickup are exactly who this car suits, and few SUVs in our fleet are cheaper to feed or easier to squeeze into a packed basement car park.
Size up if you're regularly carrying four adults with luggage, or if rear-seat comfort and rear air vents through a Dubai summer matter to your passengers. A mid-size crossover costs a little more to run but earns it back in back-seat comfort and boot space for a proper family trip. And if Hatta or the dunes are on the itinerary, this isn't the car, regardless of the SUV badge on the back. It's front-wheel drive on road tyres, at home on tarmac and out of its depth anywhere else.
We deliver the Groove to your door within one to two hours, mileage runs 250 km a day before the AED 0.5 per km overage kicks in, and you'll need to be 25 to book it. For a small, easy-to-park SUV that keeps running costs down without asking you to sacrifice the raised seating and boot most renters actually want, it's a straightforward pick.
