Not many renters recognize the Chevrolet Groove 2025 before they see it on our list, and that's fair. It's one of the newer, less common names on our fleet, a small crossover Chevrolet built for city driving rather than showroom fame, so it doesn't carry the instant recognition of a Kicks or a Creta. We still rent it in Dubai with doorstep delivery in one to two hours, and once you look past the unfamiliar badge, the case for it is simple: a modest 1.5-litre engine, an automatic gearbox, and a footprint sized for tight parking rather than a crowded segment fight. The engine, and how it drives

The Groove runs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder making 105 hp, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. There's no turbo and no dual-clutch gearbox to learn, just the kind of simple, low-drama setup that's easy to hand over and easy to drive away in. Around town it does the job without fuss, pulling cleanly from the lights and holding pace through the stop-start rhythm of city traffic.

Push it onto Sheikh Zayed Road and ask for a confident overtake with the car loaded, and the modest output shows itself. With no turbo to lean on, the CVT lets the revs climb and hold while road speed slowly catches up, so anything above 100 km/h feels short of urgency. Plan the overtake a few seconds ahead rather than snapping into a gap and it never feels stressed. It's a city automatic that can survive the highway, not the other way round, and despite the raised body it's front-wheel drive on road tyres. Hatta trails and soft sand aren't part of its brief.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The boot holds about 320 litres with all five seats up, which in real terms is one large suitcase and a soft bag, not a full family's cases stacked for a DXB or DWC run. Fold the rear bench and that grows to roughly 1,120 litres, enough for a supermarket stock-up, a flatpack box, or a bike with a wheel off. For a solo renter or a couple, the smaller figure rarely causes a problem. For four people flying in with a week of luggage between them, it will.

The back seat suits two adults for a normal trip across town, or three kids across for the school run. Add a fourth adult and everyone's bags for an airport haul and knees start meeting seatbacks, which is the honest limit of a car built this compact, not a flaw unique to the Groove. Up front, the raised seating gives the driver and front passenger the higher view that draws people to a crossover shape in the first place.

That same small footprint pays off the moment you park. At 4.22 metres long and 1.74 metres wide, the Groove drops into a tight Marina tower bay or a packed mall multi-storey slot without the shuffling a bigger SUV needs, and a U-turn on a busy service road stays a single move. The 160 mm of ground clearance takes speed bumps and steep mall ramps at a normal pace, without the scrape you'd risk in a lower sedan.

The mileage deal, fuel and cabin heat

Read the mileage line carefully, because it works differently here than on most cars we rent. You get 4,500 km to use across the whole rental, not per day, so the math shifts with how long you keep the car. Over a week that's well over 600 km a day available, more than any city renter needs. Over a month it settles closer to 150 km a day, still enough for a daily commute plus regular errands. Go past 4,500 km and extra distance costs AED 0.3 a kilometre, a mild rate as overages go. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys, and Salik tolls plus any RTA fines during the rental fall to you, the same as with every car on our fleet.

Fuel is where the Groove earns its keep day to day. Official combined economy sits around 6.5 litres per 100 km, and real Dubai driving, with the AC working hard and traffic stopping and starting, pushes that closer to 8 or 9. Even at the thirstier end it's cheap to feed. The 45-litre tank gives roughly 500 km of city range, so a normal week of commuting and errands means one trip to the pump, maybe two if you're driving in from the far suburbs daily.

Cabin cooling matters more than horsepower once the afternoon heat sets in, and the Groove's small interior helps here. There's less air to chill than in a bigger SUV, so the front vents pull a cabin that's been baking in a 48-degree car park down to bearable within a few minutes of climbing back in. There are no rear vents on this generation, so a back-seat passenger relies on air pushed through from the front, fine for one person, slower to reach a full row on the hottest days. Park in shade where you can and it stops mattering. The plastics inside are hard and clearly built to a price, but everything is screwed together tightly enough to live with.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Groove if the unfamiliar badge doesn't bother you and what you actually want is a cheap, easy-to-park small SUV for one or two people. Commuters, solo residents between homes, and couples running errands and the odd airport pickup get real value out of that whole-rental mileage figure, and few cars on our fleet cost less to keep fed or slot into a packed basement car park more easily.

Look elsewhere if you want a name you already recognize, if you're regularly carrying four adults with luggage, or if rear-seat comfort and rear vents through a Dubai summer matter to your passengers. A better-known mid-size crossover costs a little more to run but earns it back in cabin space and familiarity. And if any part of your trip involves real off-road driving, the Groove isn't that car, whatever the SUV shape suggests, because the front-wheel drive keeps it on the tarmac.
