The Chevrolet Groove 2024 is the small SUV we rent to people who want the higher seat and the easy view out without paying SUV money, and we deliver it across Dubai within one to two hours, debit cards and pay-on-delivery accepted. It's a five-seat economy crossover with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, an automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive. The honest pitch is this: it gives you the upright driving position and the crossover stance that a lot of renters want, at the running cost of a city hatch. Treat it as a smart city car wearing SUV clothes and you'll be happy. Expect it to behave like a real off-roader and you won't. Here's where it fits a Dubai week.
The first thing most people notice is the seating. You sit up a little higher than in a hatch, which makes Dubai's wide multi-lane roads and busy junctions easier to read. Merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road, judging a gap at a roundabout, reversing out of a packed mall bay, all of it is simpler when you can see over the traffic a bit. For nervous or visiting drivers getting used to the city, that raised view is worth more than any spec on the sheet.
This is the question we get most from May onward, so let's deal with it early. Park anywhere in the sun and the cabin turns into an oven, and what counts is how fast the AC claws it back. The Groove's small interior helps here, because there's less air to chill, so the front vents bring the temperature down quickly once you're rolling. A minute with the doors shut and it's livable. It's a budget car, so there are no rear vents and no dual-zone climate. The two front seats get cold; back-seat passengers on a long, hot run will feel the difference. For a couple up front it's genuinely fine.

The 45-litre tank paired with that economical 1.5 means fuel is barely an issue on a normal week. City driving lands around 6 to 7 litres per 100 km, so a tank stretches across several days of school runs, errands and the occasional trip out to DWC. You'll fill up once, maybe twice, on a typical week. For anyone keeping the rental cheap, that low thirst is half the reason to choose this car.
At 4.22 metres it's compact, so the tight bays, narrow ramps and U-turns that define daily Dubai driving are all easy. The 155 mm ground clearance clears speed bumps and mall entrance lips without scraping, which is all most renters need from clearance.
The look writes a cheque the mechanicals don't fully cash, though. Front-wheel drive and modest clearance make this a paved-road car. It'll handle a graded desert-camp track at a crawl, but soft sand and Hatta's rougher trails are out. If a real off-road plan is on your itinerary, rent a proper 4x4 and keep the Groove for the city.
The boot is 320 litres, decent for the class. Two travellers with a large case each plus soft bags fit without drama. Load it for a family of four on a week's holiday and you'll be folding part of the rear bench to make the suitcases work. Three adults in the back is a short-trip arrangement, not a comfortable cross-town one. Four adults with airport luggage is the point where we'd steer you to something bigger.
Salik charges run to you at each gantry, and any RTA fines during your hire are yours too. Children under four need a child seat by law, which we'll fit on request. Nothing unusual for Dubai, just worth knowing up front.
Take the Groove 2024 if you want the higher seat, the easy visibility and the crossover look while paying city-car running costs. For a couple or a small family doing the daily Dubai grind, it's a sensible, cheap, no-fuss automatic.
Look elsewhere if you'll regularly carry four adults and their luggage, or if your week is mostly fast highway miles. The 1.5 gets the job done around town but feels stretched on long overtakes above 100, and the back seats aren't where you want adults for hours. For those trips, a larger crossover or a sedan is the better spend. For the city, the Groove gives you the most car for the least money.
