On the road, that smaller engine is honestly enough for what a Dubai week asks of it. Pulling away from a light, merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road, holding 120 in the outside lane, none of that troubles the Captiva. Load all seven seats and the boot, then ask for a brisk overtake, and the CVT flares and holds a high note while the car gathers speed rather than snapping forward the way a stepped automatic would. That is not really a fault. It is the trade you make for a lighter, cheaper-to-rent SUV instead of a truck-based one.

Seats, boot and the honest cargo trade-off

Chevrolet still sells the Captiva as a genuine three-row, seven-seat SUV, and that third row is real, not a token fold-out. It is also sized for children. Two kids ride back there without complaint on the school run or a trip to the mall. Put two adults in those seats and they will manage one loop of the neighbourhood before asking to swap with the middle row. Book the Captiva expecting a comfortable five-seater with two spare seats, not a car that seats seven adults for a real journey.

The middle row carries the real capacity, with three children across it or two adults with proper legroom, and it slides forward to hand the third row extra space when someone is actually sitting there. Boot space follows the same honest pattern. With all three rows up there is 117 litres behind the back seats, room for school bags and the shopping, not suitcases. Fold the third row and a proper square boot returns for the weekly run or an airport pickup. Drop the middle row as well and it opens to around 1,710 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a bike. Packing seven people and their luggage for the same trip does not work in this car. Plan on six travellers with light bags, or five with a full load.

Fuel, mileage and keeping the cabin cool

Heat is where the bigger three-row cabin works against the Captiva. Leave it in a car park at midday and there is more air to shift once you climb back in than in a small hatchback. The front vents pull the temperature down quickly for the first two rows. The third row is the last part of the cabin to cool, which matters if that is where the kids end up sitting on a July afternoon. Start the engine and let the air move for a few minutes before everyone climbs in, and use shaded or basement parking where you can. Treat the climate system as effective for a budget SUV rather than expecting the fast, even cooling of a pricier car.

Who should rent it, and who should size down

And if what you actually want is the old Trailblazer idea, a tall, tough SUV with real four-wheel drive for weekend runs off the tarmac, Chevrolet does not currently sell a like-for-like replacement in the UAE. That capability now sits with other brands' mid-size SUVs, not this one.
