The turbo makes its torque early, so pulling away from a light with a trolley's worth of shopping in the boot doesn't feel like a struggle, and merging onto the highway with four people aboard is unremarkable in the right sense of the word.

Load it up with all seven seats down and something on top for an overtake at speed, and the CVT holds a higher note while the car gathers pace rather than snapping forward like a stepped automatic would. It settles back down once you're cruising. For errands around town, where the car rarely carries more than four people and a boot of bags, none of this shows up. It only matters on the days you're using every seat and asking for a quick overtake at the same time, which for most weeks is the exception rather than the rule.

The back seat, the boot and a real week's shopping

Chevrolet sells this generation as a five- or seven-seat crossover, and the honest way to think about the third row is as a kids' bench, not a third pair of adult seats. Two children ride back there without complaint for a school pickup or a short hop to a friend's house. Two adults will manage one loop of the neighbourhood before asking to swap. Book it expecting a proper five-seater with two spare seats for the days a grandparent visits or the kids bring a friend along, and you'll get exactly what you paid for.

The middle row is where the real space sits, taking three kids across or two adults with proper legroom, and it slides forward to give the third row breathing space when someone's actually using it.
