Chevrolet Captiva 2024 - start from 221 AED / day

Picture a normal Tuesday: two kids in the back, a third on a sleepover that needs collecting, and a boot already half full of school bags. That's the job the Chevrolet Captiva 2024 was built to do, and we rent it across Dubai with 250 km a day included, which covers the morning drop-off, the after-school run and a weekend dash to the beach without a second thought about mileage. This is a budget seven-seater, not a big SUV, so the real question this page settles is simple: is occasional third-row seating in a compact crossover enough for your family, or do you need to size up.

Who the Captiva actually suits

We hand this car to families who are five most days and seven a few times a week. The third row folds flat, the boot opens up, and you've got a tidy crossover for the daily school run that turns into a people-mover when the cousins are visiting or the carpool falls to you. The 1.5-litre turbo and CVT are tuned for calm city driving, not for hauling seven adults up a hill, and that's the honest line on this car. If your seven seats are nearly always full of grown-ups, this isn't the one.

The third row and the boot, honestly

Here's where families need the truth. The Captiva is 4670 mm long, which is compact for a seven-seater, and that length has to go somewhere. The third row is a genuine pair of seats, fine for kids on the school run or two adults on a short hop across town, but it's tight for taller passengers on a long drive. Put both rear seats up and the boot shrinks to enough for a few backpacks and a shopping bag. Fold them flat and you get a proper flat load floor that swallows a week's worth of cases and a stroller.

So plan around how you'll use it. Five up with the third row down is roomy and easy. Seven up with luggage is the squeeze. For an airport run from DXB or DWC with seven people and their bags, you'll be choosing between passengers and suitcases, and that's the moment to look at a full-size SUV instead.

Heat, AC and the daily Dubai grind

A parked cabin in June bakes, and a three-row car has a lot of air to cool. The Captiva's front AC pulls the temperature down at a steady, sensible pace rather than instantly, so give it a couple of minutes with the windows cracked before the kids climb in. Rear passengers get their own vents, which matters a lot when the third row is occupied and the afternoon sun is on the glass. It's adequate family cooling, not luxury climate control, and at 45 degrees that distinction is worth knowing before you book.

On the road the turbo has enough push for the school run and for merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road, though the CVT lets the engine drone when you ask for a hard overtake at speed. Around town it's smooth and quiet, which is what most of your week looks like anyway.

Parking, speed bumps and city size

At 1835 mm wide the Captiva slots into mall bays and multi-storey parking without the stress a larger SUV brings, and the reversing aids make tight Marina ramps manageable. Ground clearance of 180 mm clears the aggressive speed bumps in residential communities and the lips on mall ramps with room to spare, so you're not crawling over every hump. It's an easy car to live with in the city, which is half the reason a family rents it over something bigger.

Fuel, range and what you'll spend at the pump

The 52-litre tank and city economy of around 9 to 10.2 km/L give you a real-world week between fills. On a tank you're looking at roughly 676 to 868 km depending on how much highway versus stop-and-go you do, so most families on the school-and-errands routine refuel once a week, maybe twice if you're adding longer weekend runs. That's a relief on a budget rental, and it's one of the car's quiet strengths.

A couple of Dubai admin points worth stating plainly. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are yours to settle, seat belts are required in every row, and children under four need a proper child seat, which the third row complicates if you're carrying babies.

The verdict

Rent the Captiva 2024 if you're a family of five most days who needs two extra seats on call, drives mostly in the city, and wants seven-seat flexibility without paying full-size SUV money. It's a sensible, easy car for exactly that life. If you're regularly seven adults, or you need seven seats plus full airport luggage at the same time, step up to a larger three-row SUV. And if those back seats almost never come up, save yourself the length and take a five-seat crossover instead. For occasional-seven, everyday-five family duty, the Captiva earns its keep.
