Chevrolet Captiva 2023 - start from 165 AED / day

Need seven seats for the odd weekend when the whole family piles in, but a daily that won't sting? We deliver the Chevrolet Captiva 2023 to your door in Dubai, usually within one to two hours, so you can size up only on the trips that need it. The case for this older-year Captiva is simple: it's the cheap way to keep a third row on hand. Most of the week you'll run it as a comfortable five-seat SUV with a high seat and a clear view of traffic, and on the days the cousins land at the airport, you fold the rear bench up and everyone fits. This page is about who that trade actually suits, and who should reach for a bigger SUV.

A third row you use sometimes, not daily

The Captiva's third row is the whole point and also its honest limit. Two adults can sit back there for a short hop across town, a school run, or an airport collection, but it's a kids-and-short-trips space, not a place to put grown men for an hour on Sheikh Zayed Road. Knees come up, legs go short. For a family of five with the occasional sixth or seventh passenger, that's a fair deal at this rate. If you're routinely carrying seven adults, this isn't the car, and I'll say so again at the end.

With the third row up, the boot behind it is small. Think a couple of soft bags or the day's shopping, not a week of hard cases. Drop that row flat, though, and you get a proper five-seat SUV load bay: a big weekly grocery run, a pram and a folded buggy, or two large suitcases for an airport drop fit without a fight. That folding bench is what you're really renting here.

What it's like to drive in Dubai

The engine is a 1.5-litre turbo four making 144 hp, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. Light, that combination is fine. Around the Marina, on mall ramps, in the daily stop-and-go, it pulls cleanly and the gearbox keeps things smooth. Load it with seven people and luggage and ask for a confident overtake on the E11, and you feel the modest power working. It gets there, it just isn't urgent about it. Plan your moves on the highway with a full cabin and you'll be relaxed about it.

The high driving position is a genuine plus in Dubai traffic. You see over the sedans, you place the car easily in tight multi-storey bays, and U-turns are no drama. Ground clearance is 176 mm, enough to clear speed bumps and steep parking ramps without scraping, but this is a road SUV. It's front-wheel drive, so leave the soft desert and the dune tracks to a body-on-frame 4x4. For tarmac, ramps and the odd graded track, it's well judged.

Heat, AC and the cabin

Dubai summers push past 45°C, and a car left in the sun turns into an oven. The Captiva's cabin is a fair size, so the AC takes a few minutes to bring a parked interior down from brutal to comfortable rather than doing it instantly. Park in shade where you can, run the fan hard for the first stretch, and it copes. Check the rear vent situation when we hand it over if you're regularly filling the back rows, since strong airflow to the second and third row matters more with kids aboard than any front-seat number.

Fuel, range and the running cost

The tank holds 52 litres and the official combined figure is around 13.4 km per litre. In real Dubai use, with AC fighting the heat and city stop-start, expect a bit less than that, closer to the low double digits. Even so, a tank comfortably covers a normal week of school runs, errands and a couple of airport trips before you think about refuelling. For a seven-seater, that's economical, and it's a large part of why the Captiva makes sense as a value pick over a thirstier large SUV you don't need most days.

Costs that land on you, briefly

A few Dubai rental basics worth knowing up front. Salik tolls are yours, billed per gantry as you pass through them, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you as the driver. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which matters more in a car you're renting precisely because it carries kids. None of this is unusual, but with a seven-seater family in mind it's worth stating plainly.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the 2023 Captiva if you're a family of four or five who needs a sixth or seventh seat now and then: airport pickups, weekend visitors, the school carpool. You get a high-set, easy-to-park SUV, a folding third row for the odd big load, and running costs that stay sensible, all at a softer older-year rate than the newer car. That's the sweet spot.

Skip it if your default is seven adults, long highway hauls with everyone aboard and a full boot, or any real off-road plan. The 1.5 turbo and CVT are honest about their limits under a heavy load, and the boot behind a raised third row is small. For that, size up to a larger seven-seater or a proper body-on-frame 4x4. For everyone else, who mostly needs five seats and occasionally seven, the Captiva is the smart, affordable way to keep the option in your driveway.
