Black looks sharp on an SUV this size, but it's also the color that soaks up the most heat sitting in a July parking bay, and that trade is worth thinking through before you book a Chevrolet Captiva 2023. We hand this one over at your door in Dubai, usually within one to two hours, in the black paint currently on the fleet. This page works through what that trade actually costs you over a summer week: how much longer a dark cabin takes to cool, how the seven seats and boot hold up for daily errands, and where the Captiva's modest engine and running costs land against the rest of its class, rather than just how good the paint looks in photos.
Under the hood is a 1.5-litre turbo four making 147 hp and 250 Nm, sent through a CVT automatic to the front wheels only. There's no 4x4 version of this generation, whatever the tall body suggests, so this is a tarmac car with 180 mm of ground clearance rather than a desert one. Around town the CVT is smooth and unremarkable in the way you want a rental to be, pulling away cleanly from a stop and holding a steady note on Sheikh Zayed Road once you're up to speed. Ask it for a quick overtake with the car loaded and you'll notice the turbo working to catch up, so plan your gap rather than trusting a stab of the throttle. It's not a car built to feel fast. It's built to be an easy, predictable drive for a family doing the school run one day and an airport collection the next, and on that measure it does its job without drama.
The Captiva is sold as a genuine three-row, seven-seat SUV, and the honest answer is that the third row suits kids, not adults. Two children ride back there fine on the way to school. Two adults last a few minutes before they want to swap. The middle row does the real work, fitting three kids across or two adults with decent space, and it slides forward to hand the third row extra room when it's actually needed. Up front, two adults sit high enough to see over the traffic, which is most of the point of choosing an SUV shape in the first place.
Cargo space follows the same pattern. With all three rows up, you're looking at 117 litres, enough for school bags and a supermarket run, not suitcases. Fold the third row flat and a proper square boot reappears for the weekly shop. Drop the middle row too and you're close to 1,710 litres, which covers flatpack furniture or a bike. For a DXB or DWC pickup with seven people and their cases, plan on six travelers with light bags, or five with a full load. Both together doesn't fit.

Here's where the color earns its own paragraph. A dark cabin left in the sun runs hotter than a light one, and the dashboard and steering wheel on this car will be genuinely hot to the touch after a few hours parked outside in August. Get the engine running and the AC pulling before everyone climbs in rather than after, and it settles down within a few minutes once the front vents get going. The third row is the slowest part of the cabin to cool, which matters if that's where a child ends up sitting. A sunshade on the windscreen and a shaded or basement bay make more difference on this car than on a lighter-colored one, and they cost nothing.
On fuel, Chevrolet's own combined figure sits near 16 km/L, which is a lab result rather than a real one. Loaded up in Dubai traffic with the AC working hard, expect closer to 10 or 11 km/L in practice. The 52-litre tank still carries you around 500 km on that kind of driving, so a normal week means a couple of stops at the pump rather than daily ones. The number worth checking before you book is the mileage allowance: 250 km a day is included, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per kilometre, so a full day out to Hatta and back is worth a quick sum first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, as with any car here, and a daily Sheikh Zayed Road commute adds those toll gates up faster than most people expect.
Rent the Captiva if your household is four or five people who occasionally need two extra seats, for a cousin visiting, a school friend along for the ride, or a grandparent staying over, and you'd rather not pay full-size SUV money for seats that sit empty most weeks. It parks in a standard multi-storey bay without the shuffle a bigger SUV needs, and school runs, mall trips and the odd airport collection are exactly its comfort zone.
Two things to be straight about. This is front-wheel drive despite the SUV styling, so keep it on tarmac and leave the dunes to something with 4x4 written on the spec sheet. And if you're genuinely carrying six or seven adults, or you need the third row usable every day rather than occasionally, a larger SUV with real back-row space and a boot that survives a full load is the better call. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys, the daily allowance is 250 km with extra distance at AED 0.5 a kilometre, and we can have it at your door within one to two hours. If you like how the black paint looks and you're realistic about what a dark cabin needs in August, the Captiva is a sensible, well-priced way to carry a family that needs seven seats sometimes and not the rest of the week.
