Chevrolet Captiva 2023 - start from 166 AED / day

Most seven-seat SUVs in Dubai want the main driver to be 25 before they'll hand over the keys, which rules out a lot of people who still need the extra seats. The Chevrolet Captiva 2023 doesn't. We rent it from age 21, and that matters if you're a young family, a group of flatmates splitting a mall run and a Costco trip, or the one person in a visiting group who happens to hold a valid license. We get the car to your door within one to two hours of booking. Underneath, the Captiva is a compact, front-wheel-drive three-row crossover rather than a full-size SUV, and this page is about whether that smaller shape, alongside the lower age limit, actually gives you what a week of Dubai driving needs.

What powers the Captiva, and how that feels with a full load

The engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four making 147 hp and 250 Nm, paired with a CVT automatic that drives the front wheels only. There's no four-wheel-drive version of this generation, whatever the raised body suggests, so the 180 mm of ground clearance is there for speed bumps and mall ramps, not sand tracks out toward Hatta.

On an ordinary day it does the job without drama. The turbo makes its pull early, so setting off from a light or joining Sheikh Zayed Road with four or five people aboard feels reasonably confident rather than strained. Load all seven seats and the boot, then ask for a quick overtake at speed, and the CVT holds a higher note while the car gathers pace instead of snapping forward the way a stepped automatic would. It isn't a problem so much as a habit to build: plan the overtake a beat earlier than you would in a bigger, pricier SUV, and the Captiva keeps up fine.

Seats, cargo and what a normal day actually demands

Chevrolet sells this as a genuine three-row, seven-seat crossover, and the honest read on that third row is that it's built for children. Two kids ride back there without complaint on the school run or a short hop across town. Sit two adults there and they'll manage a loop of the block before asking to swap. Plan on a comfortable five-seater with two spare seats for the days you actually need them, not a car that carries seven adults for a real trip.

The middle row is where the real space lives, taking three kids across or two adults with proper legroom, and it slides forward to hand the third row a bit more space when someone's actually sitting in it. Cargo follows the same pattern. With all three rows up there's 117 litres behind the back seats, which covers school bags and the weekly shop, not suitcases. Fold the third row flat and a normal, square boot returns. Drop the middle row too and it opens to around 1,710 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a couple of bikes. For a DXB or DWC pickup with seven people and their bags, be realistic: this car does six travellers with light luggage, or five with a full load, rarely both at once.

Running costs, tolls and a hot afternoon in the car park

Chevrolet's own combined figure sits close to 16 km/L, which is a lab number with an empty cabin and no AC load. A Captiva carrying a family through Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working hard is realistically closer to 10 or 11 km/L. Even at that real-world rate the 52-litre tank is good for around 500 km, so a normal week of school runs and errands means one or two visits to the pump rather than a daily one.

The figure worth reading before you book is the mileage allowance: 250 km a day, which covers city life comfortably. Push past it and it's AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, so a full day out to Al Ain or Hatta and back is worth a quick sum first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental fall to you, the same as with every car we hand over, and a daily Sheikh Zayed Road commute adds those toll gates up faster than most people expect.

Heat works against a cabin this size. Park the Captiva outside for an afternoon in July and there's more air in there to chill once you climb back in than in a small hatchback. Silver paint helps a little, reflecting more heat off the body than a black or dark grey car would, but it won't undo the physics of a three-row interior. The front vents pull the temperature down quickly once the engine's running, and the front two rows cool fast. The third row is always the last part of the cabin to catch up, which matters if that's where a child is sitting. Start the car and give the AC a minute before everyone climbs in, and use shade or a basement level where you can find one.

Best fit for the Captiva, and when a bigger SUV wins instead

Rent the Captiva if your regular group is four or five people who occasionally need two more seats, for a visiting relative, a friend tagging along, or the odd school pickup that grows by two kids. For that pattern it's a genuinely economical seven-seater, easy to park in a multi-storey bay or a Marina tower that a full-size SUV would struggle with, and open to renters as young as 21, which several rivals in this class simply aren't.

Be clear-eyed about two things before you book. This is front-wheel drive despite the SUV stance, so keep it on tarmac and leave any desert plans to something built for sand. And if six or seven adults, not children, are your normal load, or you lean on the third row every day rather than occasionally, a larger three-row SUV with a proper stepped automatic will suit you better and won't ask a small turbo engine to work at its limit.

The terms are straightforward: drivers need to be 21 or older, the daily allowance is 250 km with extra distance billed at AED 0.5 a kilometre, and we deliver to your door within one to two hours of booking. For a younger driver or a family that needs seven seats now and then without the cost or the age requirement of a bigger SUV, the Captiva is one of the few sensible options in Dubai that will actually rent to you.
