Need a seven-seater that doesn't blow the family budget? We hand over the Chevrolet Captiva 2023 across Dubai with payment kept flexible and settled on delivery, so you can sort the car first and the rest at the door. This is the affordable everyday family SUV in our fleet: three rows, a high seating position, and enough space for the school run on weekdays and a coast trip at the weekend. It isn't the biggest SUV we rent, and the 1.5 turbo is modest. What it does well is give a growing family seven seats and a commanding view of the road without pushing you up into the heavy, thirsty class above it.
Most families looking at a seven-seater in Dubai don't need a body-on-frame off-roader. They need somewhere to put the kids, the grandparents on a visit, and a week of groceries, while sitting high enough to see over Sheikh Zayed Road traffic. The Captiva covers exactly that. It's a midsize crossover with a third row, front-wheel drive, and a tall cabin, which makes it easy to load car seats into and easy to climb out of in a tight mall bay.
The honest trade is the engine. A 1.5-litre turbo putting out 144 hp moves an empty Captiva around town with no fuss. Load five or six people and a boot full of bags, and you feel it work harder on motorway on-ramps and long inclines. It's never alarming, just unhurried. For city errands, airport drop-offs, and weekend drives at sensible speeds, that's plenty. If you regularly carry seven adults and overtake at highway pace, you'll want something with more under the bonnet.
| Spec | Chevrolet Captiva 2023 |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Family SUV, 5-door crossover |
| Seats | 7 |
| Engine | 1.5L turbo, 4-cylinder |
| Power | 144 hp, 230 Nm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel economy | About 14 km/L combined (~6.9 L/100km official) |
| Fuel tank | 52 L |
| Range | Roughly 700 km on a tank in mixed driving |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4673 x 1849 x 1727 mm |
| Ground clearance | 176 mm |
| Top speed | 180 km/h |
| Boot | 847 L with the third row folded |
Across the first two rows, the Captiva is genuinely roomy. Two adults up front and three kids across the middle bench travel comfortably, and the flat-ish floor means the centre middle seat isn't a punishment. The third row is where you set expectations. It's a real bench, useful for two children or for adults on short hops across town, but legroom back there is tight and nobody wants the third row for a long drive to Hatta.
Then there's the boot. With all seven seats up, the space behind the third row is small, enough for a few soft bags or a folded pushchair, not a week of hard cases. The 847-litre figure only arrives once you fold that rear bench flat, at which point the Captiva becomes a proper five-seat load-hauler. The practical reality: use it as a five-seater with a big boot most of the time, and flip up the third row when you need the extra seats for an hour or two. If you need seven seats and full airport luggage at the same time, a larger SUV is the right call.
Dubai heat is the first thing renters with kids ask about, and a tall glasshouse like this gets hot when it's parked at 45 degrees. The Captiva's air conditioning is up to the job for the class. Front vents cool the cabin down at a steady pace rather than instantly, so the trick is the same as any car here: get moving, drop the windows for a few seconds to dump the worst of the trapped air, then let it run. The third row benefits from rear vents feeding air back, which matters a lot if children are sitting there. Park in shade or a basement when you can, because a dark interior under direct sun is always slower to recover.
At 4673 mm long it's a midsize SUV, not a barge, so multi-storey bays and mall ramps are manageable once you've judged the nose, and the high driving position helps you place it. Ground clearance of 176 mm clears Dubai's aggressive speed bumps and community humps without scraping, and it copes fine with the lip on a Marina parking ramp. Rear visibility over three rows of headrests is the usual SUV compromise, so lean on the camera when reversing into a bay.
On Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 the Captiva cruises calmly at the limit. The CVT keeps revs low and the cabin quiet at a steady 120, which suits long airport runs to DXB or the haul out to DWC. Push for a hard overtake with a full load and the gearbox lets the engine spin up before the speed follows, so plan your moves rather than expecting instant shove.
Fuel is where the modest engine pays you back. Around 14 km/L combined out of the 52-litre tank works out near 700 km of range in mixed driving, so a typical week of city use and a couple of longer trips means one fill-up, maybe two. Real Dubai numbers run a bit thirstier than the official 6.9 L/100km once the AC is fighting the heat and you're in stop-start traffic, but it's still cheaper to feed than the V6 seven-seaters.
A few local rules to keep in mind: Salik tolls run to the renter, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you as well. Seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need an appropriate child seat, which is worth sorting before you collect the car with a young family on board.
Rent the Captiva 2023 if you're a budget-minded family who wants seven seats on tap, a high view of the road, and low running costs for school runs, visiting relatives, and weekend trips. As an everyday five-seater with the third row in reserve, it's one of the easiest, most affordable family SUVs we hand over.
Skip it if your default is seven adults plus full luggage, or you want real off-road and towing muscle for the dunes. The 1.5 turbo and the small boot-behind-row-three are the limits here, and for that job a larger body-on-frame SUV earns its keep. For most Dubai families, though, the Captiva sits in the sweet spot between a cramped sedan and an SUV that costs far more to run.
