If you need seven seats in Dubai without paying SUV-badge money, the Chevrolet Captiva 2022 is about the cheapest sensible way to get them, and we'll rent it to drivers from 18. This is the budget family SUV in plain terms: three rows, a high seating position, and a rate that makes a week of school runs and mall trips easy to justify. The honest part is what a 1.5-litre engine does once all seven seats are full, and how little boot you're left with when the third row is up. Our argument is simple. For two adults, a few kids and the occasional extra passenger, the Captiva does the job for less; for six adults at highway speed, look higher up the range.
The Captiva 2022 is a front-wheel-drive economy SUV with a 1.5-litre turbo, 144 hp and an automatic gearbox, seating seven across three rows. That's the whole reason most people pick it over a five-seat crossover at a similar rate. With two or three aboard it's perfectly happy around town and merges onto Sheikh Zayed Road without drama. Load all three rows and add bags, though, and the engine has to work for it, and you'll feel it hunting for revs on a long incline or a hard overtake on the E11. It's adequate rather than eager. If you'll regularly carry six or seven adults at speed, a bigger engine is worth the step up.

Seven seats sounds generous until you sit in the back two. The first two rows are genuinely comfortable, with usable legroom for adults up front and growing kids in the middle. Treat the third row as occasional, best for two children or short hops with easygoing adults. The boot is where you have to be realistic. With the third row folded flat you get up to 847 litres, plenty for a family's weekly shop or a few large cases. Raise that row for passengers and the space behind it shrinks to almost nothing, room for a couple of soft bags and not much more. So it's a per-trip choice: seven people or full luggage, rarely both. A DXB run with five passengers and their cases works if you fold one side of the third row; six or seven plus airport luggage is where a bigger SUV makes more sense.
Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a Captiva parked in July gets brutally hot inside. The front air conditioning is strong and pulls the cabin down at a fair pace once you're moving, though like most cars in this class the first few minutes after a midday park are a sweat. The thing to watch with a full load is rear airflow. Front and middle cool quickly, but the third row sits furthest from the vents and takes longer, so if there are kids back there on a hot afternoon, give it a head start before you load them in. It's a budget family SUV, not a luxury climate setup, and it behaves like one.
At 4655 mm long it's a midsize footprint, easy enough to place in mall multi-storey bays and Marina ramps once you've got a feel for it, though it's no compact you can flick into any gap. The 176 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and raised ramps without scraping, and the high seating gives the commanding view that sells SUVs in the first place. On the open road it cruises calmly at legal speeds; it just hasn't got much in reserve above 100 with a heavy load. The 52-litre tank and a combined figure around 6.9 L/100km give a real-world range near 700 km, so a week of errands and a couple of airport runs means filling up maybe once or twice, and petrol here is cheap enough that it barely registers.
A few Dubai rules to keep straight. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you as the renter, so drive it like the charges are yours, because they are. Seat belts are mandatory in every row, including the third, and children under four need a proper child seat.
Rent the Captiva 2022 if you're a family that needs occasional third-row seats and wants the cheapest sensible way to get them. Two adults, a few kids, the school run, the mall, weekend trips with the back row mostly folded for cargo: that's its sweet spot, and the rate makes it an easy yes. Don't rent it if you'll routinely carry six or seven adults at highway speed, or if you need a full boot and a full third row at the same time. For that, and for anyone planning serious desert or rough-track driving, step up to a larger SUV with a bigger engine. The Captiva is an honest, affordable seven-seater for light family use, and within those limits it does the job well.
