The BMW M4 2022 we rent is the Competition convertible: a 510 hp twin-turbo straight-six, all-wheel drive, and a folding hard top, and we deliver it anywhere in Dubai within one to two hours. It's the rare car that works as both a sunset cruiser and a genuine performance machine, which is unusual, because most fast convertibles trade away the drive for the drama. This one keeps both. The question this page answers is whether that combination is worth it for your week, or whether you'd be better off with a coupe for sharper handling or a softer convertible for pure cruising.
We rent it from 18, and an M4 flatters a confident driver while exposing a nervous one, so that age limit comes with a quiet word rather than a wink.
Drop the roof and the M4 is a head-turning open-top for an evening coast run. Put the roof up and flatten the throttle on an empty slip road and it's something else entirely. The 3.0-litre straight-six pulls cleanly from low revs, so you don't have to chase the redline to feel the pace, and 0 to 100 km/h comes up in around 3.7 seconds. All-wheel drive is what makes that usable on an ordinary Tuesday. Plant the throttle on a damp underground ramp and it simply goes, no scrabbling front tyres, no drama. That traction is the difference between a car you respect from a distance and one you can relax with.

This is where you pay for the folding roof. Treat the M4 as a strict two-seater with backup. The rear seats take kids or a short hop for adults, not a comfortable airport run for four grown-ups, and the folding roof mechanism eats into boot volume when it's stowed. You'll fit a couple of soft bags or one medium case plus a carry-on, which suits a couple for a week far better than a family with hard luggage. If you need to carry people and their suitcases, the M4 convertible is the wrong tool, and I'll point you at a sedan or SUV.
Dubai parking and a 45-degree afternoon are the real test, and a convertible asks the question twice. Roof up, the cabin is compact, so there's less air to cool and the front vents pull the temperature down quickly once you're moving. Set the climate before you walk away if your unit supports remote start and you'll climb into something close to comfortable rather than an oven. Roof down at midday in summer is for photos, not for sitting in traffic. The honest plan is open-top for early mornings and evenings, roof up with the AC working through the heat of the day.
On Sheikh Zayed Road the M4 is in its element. Overtaking is instant, it sits planted at a steady cruise, and there's a deep reserve of pull for the moment a gap opens and shuts fast. The catch is the ride. This is a firm performance car on big wheels, and Dubai's speed bumps and patched side-road seams come through clearly. It never crashes or feels broken, but if your idea of a holiday car is a soft sofa, this isn't it. Two notes straight from how the UAE works: every Salik gate and any camera fine are billed to you as the renter, and this car finds the speed limit faster than almost anything we hand over, so watch the E11 gantries. Belts are required in every seat.
The M4 is wide. At nearly 1.9 metres across the body, plus mirrors, it fills a standard bay and then some, and the tighter multi-storey ramps in Marina take patience and a careful line. The nose sits low, so approach steep mall ramps and lips at an angle rather than straight on. None of it is a dealbreaker, but a first-timer should plan for it rather than be surprised.
Fuel is the running cost to budget. The twin-turbo six wants 98 octane, and real Dubai driving with the AC fighting the heat and the odd enthusiastic overtake sits around 10 to 11 litres per 100 km. The 59-litre tank gives a sensible range, but you'll see the pump more often than in a sedan, and premium fuel adds up over a week.
Rent the M4 2022 convertible if you want supercar pace and open-top theatre in one car, you're travelling two-up and light, and you can live with a firm ride for the way it drives. It's one of the few drop-tops we run that's genuinely quick out of a wet ramp and composed at speed, and the roof turns a good evening into a memorable one.
Skip it if you're carrying a family and their luggage, if a soft ride matters more to you than handling, or if a wide low car in tight Marina bays sounds like a chore. For those weeks a sedan or roomier SUV serves better. And if you want the sharpest possible drive and don't need the open roof, the M4 coupe is the tauter choice. But for pace plus open sky in one key, this is the one to book.
