Your own car goes into the workshop for three weeks and you still have a 40 km round trip to make every working day. That booking is where the Bestune T77 2024 does its best work, and it's why we hand this one to Dubai residents more often than to tourists. What a week of driving actually costs

The official combined figure is 7.1 L/100 km, and on a normal mix of commuting and errands it holds up. That 40 km commute burns under three litres a day. Add the weekend and you are somewhere near 20 litres a week, which is less than half a tank for a car that seats five and sits you up high. For anyone renting by the month rather than the weekend, that gap compounds fast.

The caveat is the tank. At 45 litres it's small for a compact SUV, so the theoretical range of roughly 630 km comes down to about 500 in real summer conditions with the air conditioning working hard against a 45 degree afternoon. That's still a fill roughly every week to ten days on city use. It just means the gauge moves faster than the economy figure suggests, and you notice it if you were expecting a 60-litre tank's worth of comfort. Drive it gently and the numbers above are honest. Lean on the turbo through every gap on the highway and consumption climbs like it would in anything else.

Two costs sit on you rather than on the rental. Salik charges for every gantry you pass, and any RTA fine issued during the hire comes back to the renter. Mileage runs at 300 km a day with 50 fils per kilometre beyond that, and unless you're driving to Abu Dhabi and back regularly you'll never see the ceiling.

Five seats and what actually fits

The wheelbase is 2700 mm, which is longer than a lot of cars at this money, and the back seat is where you feel it. An adult sits behind an adult without negotiating, and two child seats go across the bench with room to fasten them properly rather than wrestling them in at an angle. If your rental exists to do the school run and the weekly shop, this is a comfortable car for the job.

Luggage is the honest limit. Expect one large case plus a couple of soft bags, or two medium cases if you pack them upright, and the rear seats fold when you need more. For two people flying into DXB or DWC, that's fine. For four adults arriving with a full case each, bags end up on the back seat and somebody spends the drive with a holdall on their lap. The tailgate opening is a decent height, so loading heavy things doesn't mean lifting them over a deep lip.

Five seats is the whole story. There's no third row and no clever seven-seat option, so a family of six needs a different car entirely and we'd rather tell you now than at handover.

The first five minutes in August

Any car left in open sun here becomes hostile by early afternoon, and the T77 is no exception. The dashboard and the wheel take the worst of it, and the first two or three minutes involve driving with your fingertips while the vents catch up. After that it's fine. The cabin isn't large by volume, the front vents push a lot of air, and a short drive with the windows down for the first half minute pulls the worst heat out much faster than sitting still with everything sealed. Basement parking, where you can get it, does more for you than any climate system.

Rear-seat cooling is the thing to check at handover. Whether your particular car has vents in the back of the centre console depends on how it was specified, so look before you drive away if children will be riding back there through midsummer. Under-fours need a child seat by law and we can fit one before delivery if you ask, and belts are mandatory in every seat.

Who should skip it

The gearbox is a seven-speed dual-clutch, and dual-clutches are not at their best crawling. Pulling away from rest in a queue you get a beat of hesitation, and now and then a small lurch as the clutch takes up. It's normal for the type and it settles completely once you're above 30 km/h, but if your daily drive is 45 minutes of stop-start on Sheikh Zayed Road and smoothness matters more to you than fuel bills, ask us for a car with a conventional automatic instead.

It's also front-wheel drive, so treat the raised seating position as a comfort feature and nothing more. It has no business on sand or soft ground. If your week includes a desert camp, you want a proper four-wheel-drive from us and not this.

Take the T77 2024 if you're a resident or a long-stay visitor doing real daily kilometres in the city, you want an SUV shape and a genuinely spacious back seat, and you care more about what the week costs than about which badge is on the bonnet.
