We hand over the Audi R8 2023 with the no-deposit option on the table, which is rare for a car this expensive to put a scratch on. Doorstep delivery across Dubai in a couple of hours is standard, so the keys reach you wherever you are. What you're really renting here is the engine. The 5.2-litre V10 sits behind your shoulders and pulls cleanly to 8,000 rpm, no turbo muffling the noise. This is a supercar you can actually live with for a week, more so than most. But it asks for care in return, and it is not the car for luggage or four people. Below is who should book it and who should look elsewhere.
A naturally aspirated mid-engine two-seater, and one of the last of its kind. The V10 is shared with the Lamborghini Huracan, and it sounds it. Most supercars now use small turbo engines that are faster on paper but flat to listen to. The R8 does the opposite. It rewards you for working the revs, and the sound at full throttle is the main reason to rent one over a quicker, quieter rival.
This is the rear-wheel-drive Performance version, 562 hp through the back axle and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Audi's quattro all-wheel drive is available on other R8 trims and gives more grip off the line, but the RWD car is the lighter, more playful one. On dry Dubai roads, which is most of the year, traction is rarely the limit. Your right foot is.

On Sheikh Zayed Road the R8 is calm. At a steady 120 it sits low and planted, and overtaking takes a flex of the ankle rather than a downshift and a wait. The presence is real too. People move over. That said, Dubai's speed cameras are unforgiving and every fine lands on you as the renter, along with Salik tolls. The car will hit 329 km/h. You will not, not legally, and the enforcement here makes sure of it. Belts on in both seats, always.
The low nose is the thing to watch. Speed bumps in residential areas and the steeper mall and Marina parking ramps need a slow, square approach, sometimes at an angle, or the splitter scrapes. Once you've learned the bad ramps near you it becomes second nature, but the first day takes patience. Parking itself is easy enough since the car is short, though it sits so low that taller SUVs around you can hide it in a bay.
Heat is the honest weak point of any small cabin in July. Park it in the sun at 45 degrees and the interior bakes. The R8's AC is strong and the cabin is small, so it pulls down faster than a big SUV would, but the first two or three minutes after you climb in are rough. Start it remotely or let it run before you get in if you can.
There's no rear boot. The luggage space is a small compartment under the front bonnet, and it's genuinely small. One soft holdall or a single cabin-sized case is the realistic limit, plus odds and ends in the cabin behind the seats. For a DXB or DWC airport run with one person travelling light, it works and it makes an entrance. For two people with full suitcases, it does not. Pack soft bags, not hard shells, and pack less than you think.
A naturally aspirated 5.2 V10 driven the way it wants to be driven is thirsty, and Dubai stop-start traffic does it no favours. The official combined figure is 13.7 L/100km, and you'll see worse than that if you keep chasing the noise, which you will. The 73-litre tank gives a usable range, but plan on filling up more than once across a hard-driven week. Petrol is cheap here, so the fuel cost is not the issue. The frequency of stops is what you'll notice.
Rent the R8 if the engine is the point. If you want the last great naturally aspirated V10, a week of that sound on the open stretches of the E11, and a supercar that you can park and drive without drama, this is one of the best you can book in the city. The no-deposit option makes the decision easier.
Don't rent it if you need to carry anything or anyone. Two seats, one bag, a low nose that fears speed bumps. For two couples or a family, or for a road trip with real luggage, rent a GT car or a performance SUV instead. The R8 does one thing better than almost anything else at the price, and asks you to give up almost everything practical to get it. If that trade sounds right, book it. If you hesitated on the luggage line, size up.
Stricter security terms may apply on a car in this bracket, so confirm the exact conditions at booking.
