Parking at Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates: what visitors need to know in 2026

Both of these malls switched to barrier-free parking in the last two years, and the change trips up first-time visitors more than anything else. There are no tickets to pull and no machine to feed on the way out. Cameras read your plate when you arrive and when you leave, work out how long you stayed, and bill you only if you went past the free window. Get the free hours right and you pay nothing. Miss them and the charge climbs faster than you would expect, so the two things worth knowing before you drive in are how long you get for free and how the system collects money from you.

Dubai Mall: free hours, then it gets expensive

Dubai Mall runs a barrier-free system tied to Salik, the same toll account most cars in the emirate already use. Plate-recognition cameras log your entry and exit, and any fee comes straight out of your Salik balance. If you are driving a rental, the car will almost certainly have an active Salik tag, so this happens whether you set it up or not.

You get four free hours from Monday to Thursday and six free hours from Friday to Sunday. That covers a normal shopping and lunch visit comfortably. The trouble starts past the free limit. The first paid hour is around AED 20, and the charge escalates the longer you stay. A stay of 8 to 12 hours can run to roughly AED 200, and leaving the car the better part of a day climbs toward AED 500. These rates apply in the main paid zones, Grand, Cinema and Fashion parking. The lesson is simple. Dubai Mall is built for a visit, not for leaving the car all day while you do something else nearby.

There is a way around the fee entirely. Two areas, Zabeel parking and Fountain Views parking, stay free with no time limit. Zabeel sits as an extension on the Burj Khalifa side and holds around 3,000 spaces. If you are planning a long day, the Dubai Fountain show in the evening, dinner, then a wander, park in Zabeel or Fountain Views and the clock never matters. For the evening fountain crowds, aim to arrive before the rush, and pick Fountain Views, which opens right onto the waterfront promenade where the shows happen.

Valet is the other option, useful if you would rather not hunt for a bay. It runs from roughly AED 50 and upward depending on the entrance and how busy the day is, with weekends and peak evenings at the higher end. Valet is offered at selected entrances such as Fashion Avenue, and using it covers the standard parking charge, so you are paying the valet fee instead of the hourly rate, not on top of it.

Mall of the Emirates: shorter free window, pay by SMS

Mall of the Emirates went barrier-free in early 2025, and it works a little differently from Dubai Mall. Cameras still scan your plate on the way in and out, but billing is not through Salik. If you go past the free time, you get an SMS with a payment link, and you have three days to settle it before it turns into a fine. You can pay through the link or the Parkin app, by card or Apple Pay. Keep the phone number on your booking current, because that SMS is how the mall reaches you.

The free allowance is four hours on weekdays. Weekends are easier, with parking free all day Saturday and Sunday. Past the weekday free window the charge starts around AED 20 and rises with the hours, and overnight parking is not allowed at all, with a penalty of AED 200 if you leave the car there through the night.

Two things at MOE genuinely help. First, spend AED 150 or more in the mall and your parking is free for the whole day, which is easy to hit over lunch and a bit of shopping. Second, if Ski Dubai is the reason you came, validate your Ski Dubai payment at the customer service desk and you get two extra free hours on top of the standard four, so six hours in total. A morning on the slope plus lunch fits inside that without paying for parking.

One quirk to know. If you simply drive through the structure without stopping, the cameras still register you and there is a small AED 3 charge for passing through. It is minor, but it surprises people who took a wrong turn and looped out again. Valet here is the clean option for a short trip, because using it automatically validates your parking, so the standard fee is covered.

Tips that save money and a wasted lap of the car park

A few habits make both malls painless, especially if you are new to the city and driving a rental.

• Note your level and zone name the moment you park, or photograph the nearest pillar marker. Both structures are huge and the colour-coded zones blur together by the time you come back loaded with bags.
• Watch the clock against the free window. Four hours goes quickly once you add a sit-down meal and a film, and the first paid hour at Dubai Mall is the steep jump from free to AED 20.
• At MOE, keep any receipt over AED 150 and validate it, or validate Ski Dubai at customer service, before you head back to the car.
• For the Dubai Fountain in the evening, park in Fountain Views or Zabeel at Dubai Mall and skip the paid zones entirely.
• Check that your rental has a working Salik tag. The Dubai Mall paid zones bill through Salik, so a car without an active account can leave you with a charge to chase later.
