A Mercedes S 500 2021 rental in Dubai comes down to one decision, and it isn't the colour or the dates. It's whether you want the quietest, most finished luxury saloon on the road, or whether you actually need to sit high and carry a family's worth of luggage. The flagship, and what that buys you

The S 500 sits at the top of the Mercedes saloon range, the W223 generation that landed in 2020. Under the long bonnet is a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, the M256, with a 48-volt EQ Boost mild-hybrid assist. That's 435 hp and 520 Nm through a nine-speed automatic and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. It's worth knowing this is the six, not a V8, so the S 500 gathers speed with quiet authority rather than drama. Even so, 4.9 seconds to 100 km/h is genuinely quick for a car this size and this hushed.

Its natural rival is the BMW 7 Series, and the two divide along familiar lines. The Mercedes leans softer and more formal, built around isolation and calm. The BMW feels a shade firmer and keener from the driver's seat. If your week is about being driven rather than driving, the S 500 is the one that leans your way.

Riding in the back

The wheelbase runs to 3,106 mm, and most of that length goes into the rear compartment. That is where the money sits. Two adults stretch out fully on a DXB or DWC airport run, and a stuck hour in traffic turns into something you don't much mind. There are screens almost everywhere you look: a driver display, a large portrait touchscreen running the MBUX system down the centre, and the rear passengers get their own controls for climate and seats from the armrests. The front seats are ventilated, which matters here far more than a feature list suggests.

The boot is the honest caveat. At 550 litres it's a normal large-saloon space, flat and deep, so two big hard cases and a couple of soft bags load in without a fight. Four adults each with a full airport case and a cabin bag will fill it, though, and there's no folding rear seat to fall back on. For an executive week or a couple travelling in comfort, the boot is plenty. For a full family holiday's worth of luggage, size sideways to an SUV.

On Sheikh Zayed Road, and in July heat

The 4.9-second figure is real, but it isn't the point of this car. The inline-six pulls smoothly from low revs with the mild hybrid filling any gap, so an overtake on the E11 happens in one unhurried move. The 4MATIC drivetrain isn't there for grip on dry Dubai roads so much as for stability at a cruise, and at 120 km/h the cabin settles into a hush that very few cars match. On a relaxed mixed run the 65-litre tank stretches a long way, so you're not planning your week around fuel stops.

The heat is the daily reality. A cabin this large takes a moment longer to cool from a 48-degree July car park than a small hatch would, but the climate system is strong and the rear passengers get their own vents, so the back seat cools on its own terms. Ventilated front seats take the sting out of the first few minutes after you climb back in.

Size is the thing to plan around. At nearly 5.2 metres long and sitting low, the S 500 asks for patience in tight multi-storey bays and on Marina tower ramps, and the low nose wants a gentle approach to steep ramp entries and aggressive speed bumps. The cameras and sensors do most of the parking work. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are yours to settle, as on any car here.

Who this suits, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the S 500 if the back seat and the refinement are the value: airport transfers in comfort, moving a client or family in quiet, or simply arriving in a serious car without the bulk or the shout of a big SUV. Against a 7 Series it's the softer, more formal choice, and for most people that's exactly the point.

Look elsewhere in two cases. If you need to sit high or carry a lot, a large luxury SUV serves you better than any saloon. And if you genuinely want to enjoy the wheel on a week off, something smaller and sportier will give you more back.
