The badge and the shape usually cost more than this. We rent the Mercedes CLA 250 2020 in Dubai as the affordable way into a four-door coupe that still turns heads, and you settle the bill however suits you on delivery: card, cash, or a wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay. The 2020 car is the older-year value play. You get the same low, swept silhouette and the three-pointed star for a good deal less than a current CLA, which makes this page really about one decision: do you want the look and the badge enough to live with the compromises that low roof brings.
The CLA was always the style pick in the small-Mercedes range, and the 2020 keeps the part that matters: a frameless-door, fastback profile that reads as something pricier than it is. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four making 221 hp and 350 Nm, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That's brisk, not savage. This is the CLA 250, so don't expect the 0 to 100 of the AMG cars. You'll see it in around the high-six-second range, which is plenty quick for merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road and overtaking with confidence.
What the lower year buys you is access. You drive something that looks special for less, and on a week where you want the car to match the setting, that's the whole appeal.

The table is the reference. The judgement is below.
Here's where I tell you the truth a brochure won't. That gorgeous sloping roof ends right above the rear seat, so a tall adult in the back will have their hair brushing the headliner. Two adults up front and two kids behind is the comfortable layout. Four grown adults works for a short hop across town, but nobody in the back will thank you on a long airport run.
The boot reads fine on paper at 460 litres, and it'll swallow a large case and a couple of soft bags for two people. The catch is the opening. Because this is a coupe-style sedan and not a hatchback, you load through a narrow letterbox of a trunk lid, not a wide tailgate. Big rigid suitcases go in at an angle, and bulky boxes simply won't fit through the gap. For a couple or a small family travelling light, it's fine. If you're collecting four people and their luggage from the airport, you'll be playing Tetris, and you should look at a C-class for room or an A-class sedan if you want easier rear access at a similar size.
A parked CLA in a Dubai summer car park gets hot like anything else, and that low glasshouse means a fair bit of sun lands on the dashboard. The good news is the climate system is a proper Mercedes unit. From a 45-degree soak the front vents pull the cabin down quickly once you get moving, and within a few minutes the front seats are comfortable. Rear passengers get vents too, which not every car in this class offers, so the back stays liveable. Park in shade or a basement when you can and the cabin starts the day far kinder.
At under 4.7 metres long, the CLA is an easy car to place. It slots into Marina and Downtown multi-storey bays without drama, and the tight U-turns and speed bumps you meet around the city are no problem given normal sedan ground clearance. Forward visibility is good; the thick rear pillars and small back glass mean you'll lean on the camera when reversing, which is exactly what it's there for.
A few standing rules. Salik tolls run on your account during the rental, and any RTA fines come back to you, so keep an eye on posted limits on the E11 where they change. Seat belts are required in every seat, front and back.
The official combined figure sits near 6.7 L/100km, but Dubai driving is not the test cycle. With the AC fighting the heat and a lot of stop-start traffic, expect closer to 8 or 9 in real city use. On the 51-litre tank that still gives you a comfortable cushion, and a typical week of errands and the odd highway run won't have you at the pump more than once. Petrol is cheap here, so running cost isn't the reason to pick or skip this car. The shape is.
Rent the CLA 250 2020 if you're one or two people who want a premium-looking Mercedes for the week without paying current-model money, and you're driving mostly around the city with the occasional highway stretch. It looks the part, drives sweetly, and the badge does what you want it to do.
Skip it if you're carrying four adults regularly, hauling large hard luggage, or putting tall passengers in the back for long trips. In that case the C-class gives you the rear room and the easier boot, and the A-class sedan is the smarter buy if you like the small-Mercedes size but want your passengers to actually fit. The CLA is the one you rent for how it looks and feels, eyes open about the space it trades away to get there.
