Unlike the later 2022 car, this one doesn't carry the 48-volt mild-hybrid layer, so the stop-start in heavy traffic is a touch less smooth and you don't get the little electric shove off the line. In practice that's a small thing. The engine has plenty of punch on its own, and merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or clearing a slow truck on the E11 never needs forward planning.

What you're trading for the lower rate is refinement at a crawl, not pace. If the polished hybrid feel matters to you, that's the case for the 2022. If you just want a fast, comfortable Mercedes and the keenest price in the C 300 range, the 2021 delivers.

The clearance is normal saloon height, set for tarmac, so the only habit to keep is taking steep ramp lips and the harder speed bumps slowly to spare the front. There's nothing here for sand or rough tracks; this is a car for roads, and Dubai's roads suit it well.

Heat and the cabin in summer

Cabin cooling is a real rental concern from May through September, and a white car helps a little here by not soaking up quite as much heat as a dark one in an open lot. Even so, parked at 45 degrees the interior gets hot, and the question is recovery. The climate system pulls the cabin down to comfortable within a few minutes of pulling away, the front vents are strong, and there are rear outlets so back-seat passengers aren't left waiting. Drop the windows for the first half-minute to vent the trapped air and you'll be cool before you reach the gate.

Fuel, boot and the airport run

The 66-litre tank paired with combined economy around 6.7 L/100km makes this a long-legged car. For a normal Dubai week of errands, dinners, and a couple of airport trips, expect to fill up once. The 480-litre boot is slightly more generous than you might guess for a compact sedan: two large suitcases and a couple of cabin bags load without a fight, which covers two travellers properly or a small family for the week. Four adults each with a full case is the point where it gets tight and a bigger car earns its keep. Who should rent it, and who shouldn't
