Mercedes A 220 2022 - start from 278 AED / day

There's a quicker way into a Mercedes, and the A220 2022 is it. We rent this compact sedan from 18 across Dubai, where most desks won't hand a Mercedes to anyone under 21, and deliver it to your door inside one to two hours. The draw is a 2.0-litre turbo four with 48-volt mild-hybrid assist, 190 horsepower, and a screen-heavy cabin that still feels like a proper Mercedes in a small footprint. The decision this page settles is straightforward. Do you want the badge with real pace and style, accepting a snugger back seat than mainstream rivals, or should you save money on an A200 or size up to a C-Class for room.

How it drives, and the engine that sets it apart

The A220 sits a clear step above the A200 it shares a shell with. Same body, same cabin, but the bigger turbo pulls harder everywhere, and on Sheikh Zayed Road that shows. Merging into fast traffic or passing a slow lorry at 120, you get a real shove rather than a measured response. Mercedes quotes 0 to 100 in around 7.0 seconds for the front-drive car, and it feels honest from the seat.

The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is quick once moving and slightly hesitant from a standstill, which is normal for this gearbox and not a fault. In crawling Downtown traffic it can shuffle a touch at very low speed. Out on the E11 it's smooth and keen to drop a gear the moment you ask. On the highway the A220 is in its element, quiet at 120, planted rather than nervous, with plenty in reserve.

What the cabin is like

This is a five-seat sedan with a low, tidy stance that reads sporty, and the interior is where the badge earns its keep. The twin-screen MBUX dash looks the part, the materials feel a level above the economy class, and the climate and menu controls fall easily to hand. Up front, space and comfort are good for two adults on a long drive.

The back is the catch. Two adults fit for a 20-minute hop across town, but legroom behind a tall driver is tight and the sloping roof eats headroom. For two adults and two kids on mall runs and school pickups it's fine all week. Add a fourth adult with luggage for an airport run and it gets cramped fast. That's the line where you should size up.

Will my luggage and passengers fit

The sedan boot holds around 420 litres, opened by a conventional saloon lid rather than a wide hatch. For an airport pickup at DXB that's one large case plus a cabin bag and a couple of soft holdalls, comfortably, and two large hard cases will go in if you load them flat. The narrow lip means you lose the throw-it-in flexibility a hatchback gives, so factor that in for awkward loads.

For a couple or a solo driver with normal luggage, the space is easily enough. For four-up with full airport cases, it tightens quickly, which lines up with the back-seat caveat above.

Heat, parking and the Dubai basics

Park an A220 in open sun in July and the cabin is brutal on opening, like every car here in the high 40s. The upside is that the compact interior cools fast. The front vents pull hard, the smaller volume of air means cold air at your face within a couple of minutes, and rear passengers get vents at the back of the console so kids aren't left waiting. Set the climate to auto, point the vents at yourself for the first stretch, and it settles quickly.

The light, accurate steering makes Marina and mall multi-storey ramps painless, and the compact length keeps tight bays and U-turns easy. Ground clearance is modest at around 120 mm, so take aggressive speed bumps and steep ramp transitions slowly to avoid scraping the nose. This is a city and highway car, not one for soft sand or rough tracks, and the front-drive layout confirms it. A couple of local notes: you pay the Salik tolls on your route, any RTA fines during the rental pass to you, and seat belts are required in every seat.

Fuel and how often you'll stop

The mild-hybrid 2.0 is reasonably efficient for its pace. Expect somewhere near 6.5 to 7.5 litres per 100 km in mixed Dubai driving once you factor in AC load and traffic, a little thirstier than the official figure, which is normal here. With the 51-litre tank that gives a real-world range comfortably past 600 km. For a typical week of city errands and a couple of longer runs you're filling up once, maybe twice. It takes 95 octane happily.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the A220 if you're a couple or a solo driver who wants a Mercedes that's genuinely quick and good-looking, and you're not regularly carrying four adults or piles of luggage. For a stylish week of restaurant runs, beach days and confident highway driving, it's the sweet spot in the range.

If you mostly do short city hops and want to save, the A200 looks identical and does the same job with less urgency, so take that instead. And if you need real rear-seat room and a bigger boot for family trips or four-up airport runs, skip the A-Class and step up to a C-Class. The A220 rewards the driver, not the back row.
