The cheapest way to drive a current-shape Mercedes badge through Dubai is the A 200, and we hand one over from age 18 when most of the market won't rent you a car like this until 21. The Mercedes A 200 2020 rents with us across Dubai, doorstep delivery in one to two hours, and it's the entry point to the W177 A-Class: the same widescreen cabin and three-pointed star as the pricier models, on the calmer 1.3-litre engine. So the real question this page settles isn't whether it's quick. It's whether the badge, the cabin and the running cost add up for your week, or whether you should step up to the sportier A 220 instead.
The A 200 gives you the look and the interior of a new Mercedes without the engine bill. The 1.3-litre turbo four makes 163 hp, drives the front wheels, and runs through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. On paper that's brisk, 0 to 100 in around 8.3 seconds, and in practice it's plenty for Dubai. You'll merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road without drama and sit at 120 all day without the engine sounding stressed.
What you're really buying is the cabin. The twin screens, the turbine vents, the ambient lighting at night: that's the part passengers notice, and it's identical to what the pricier A-Class models get. For a tourist who wants to arrive somewhere in a Mercedes, or a resident who wants a premium daily without the premium rate, the 200 is the sensible choice. If you specifically want the harder pull, that's the A 220.

A parked Mercedes in July sun bakes like anything else, and the A 200 has a real advantage here: a small cabin cools fast. Start it, set the climate low, and the front vents pull the cabin from oven-hot to comfortable in a couple of minutes, not the long wait you get in a big SUV. The turbine vents move a lot of air, and rear passengers get their own outlets, so nobody in the back is left sweating. On a 45-degree afternoon that matters more than almost any other feature.
At 4.42 metres the A 200 is a compact sedan, shorter than most things people picture when they hear Mercedes. That makes it easy to live with. It slots into tight multi-storey bays, takes Marina ramps and U-turns without fuss, and the 160 mm clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramps fine as long as you don't attack them. This is a car for paved roads, not desert tracks, so keep it off soft sand. The reversing camera and tidy footprint make the daily routine of malls, drop-offs and apartment parking genuinely low-effort.
The 43-litre tank is modest, and around town you'll see roughly 12 km/L in real Dubai conditions: traffic, AC flat out, short hops. That's a comfortable few hundred kilometres of city driving between fills, so a typical week of errands and the odd airport run means filling up once, maybe twice. The highway figure is much better, but plan around the city number and you won't get caught out. Petrol here is cheap, so even at the thirstier rate the running cost stays low.
A few practical points before you collect the keys. Salik tolls run on your account during the rental, and any RTA fines pass to you, so watch the gantries on Sheikh Zayed Road and keep an eye on the limit. Seatbelts are mandatory front and rear, and children under four need a proper child seat. None of this is unique to the A 200, but a quick car plus Dubai's camera network is worth the reminder.
For airport runs the boot is the thing to check. At around 420 litres it swallows two medium cases plus soft bags comfortably, which covers a couple or a small family flying into DXB or DWC. Four adults with four large suitcases is where it gets tight, and that's your cue to size up to a bigger sedan.
Rent the A 200 if you want a genuine Mercedes experience for the week without paying for performance you won't use: city driving, highway cruising, looking the part at a hotel or a meeting, all on a small fuel bill. It's ideal for a couple, a solo traveller, or a small family with carry-on luggage, and the rent-from-18 policy makes it one of the few ways a younger driver gets into a car this nice.
Skip it if you're carrying four adults and a full set of airport cases regularly, in which case a larger sedan earns its keep. And if the badge isn't enough and you actually want the car to feel fast, don't settle here, go to the A 220. For everyone else, the A 200 is the smart entry point: same cabin, same star, less to fuel.
