The soundtrack is a real part of the rental. Put it in Sport and the V8 gets loud and theatrical, which is most of why people book it in the first place.

Be honest with yourself about the ride, though. On the big wheels this thing wears, the surface of a patched Dubai side street comes through firmly, and it's busier than a normal luxury SUV over expansion joints and speed bumps. It's a performance car first. The air suspension raises the body for ramps and bumps, but this is a heavy SUV on street tyres, not a dune machine. Keep it on tarmac. The soft sand off the Al Qudra road is not where a 300,000-dirham Lamborghini belongs.

Five real seats and a boot that works

This is the whole argument for the Urus over a supercar. It's a genuine five-seater with 616 litres of boot, so two adults up front sit in comfort and three fit across the back for city hops and airport runs. Drop the rear seats and the load bay opens right up for bulkier gear.

For a DXB or DWC pickup, the boot swallows two large cases plus soft bags without a fight, which is exactly what a Huracan can't do. If your week in Dubai involves people and luggage as well as showing up, this is the car that covers both.

The catch is size. The Urus is just over two metres wide across the body, wider still with the mirrors out, and more than five metres long. In a tight Marina tower bay or a narrow mall multi-storey, you'll be folding the mirrors and taking your time. The raised air suspension clears steep ramps and speed bumps that would scrape a low car, so that part is easy. Squeezing between two pillars is the part that isn't.

Cabin and heat

The cabin cools fast, which counts for a lot when you've left it parked in a July car park and the dash reads 48 degrees. The climate system is strong front and rear, so a full load of passengers all get vents rather than the back two roasting. On the featured yellow car the interior swallows heat quickly enough that the first minute is the only uncomfortable one.

Interior quality is where the money shows. It feels special every time you get in, not just when you're pushing it, and that alone is a reason some people rent one for a week rather than an afternoon.

Who should take it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Urus if you want the Lamborghini experience but still have to carry a family, colleagues or luggage. It's the one car that does both, and among super-SUVs it's the loudest statement you can park outside a Dubai hotel.

Skip it in two cases. If it's just you and one passenger and you only want the drama and the noise, a Huracan gives you sharper theatre for less. If you actually want a plush, quiet family SUV for a fortnight of school runs and mall trips, a Range Rover is calmer, comfier over bad tarmac and far cheaper to feed.

Because feeding it is the honest downside. The 85-litre tank takes premium fuel and a heavy right foot empties it quickly, so budget for regular stops. Salik tolls and any RTA fines fall to you, and they mount up on a car you'll want to drive. The daily allowance is 250 km, and you need to be 25 to take the keys. Rent it for the presence and the pace. Just don't rent it expecting it to be cheap to run.
