It is a genuine five-seater on paper, but four adults is the comfortable count. The driving position is high, the cabin is wide, and the front seats are excellent. What surprises people is the boot. There's enough room for the airport run, which I'll come back to.

The 85-litre tank gives you a usable but not generous range, so on a busy week of city driving you'll be at the pump every two or three days, not weekly.

If that bothers you, the Urus is the wrong rental. People who book it have made peace with the running cost because the experience is the point. Just plan the fuel into your week rather than being surprised by it. Salik tolls run on your account, and any RTA speed fine or charge during the rental passes to you, which on a car this fast is worth a sober mention. Seatbelts front and rear, every time.

Living with the width

The Urus is just over two metres wide without mirrors and more than five metres long. That's the trade for the presence. Multi-storey bays in the older malls feel tight, and you'll think twice about door dings in a packed bay, so I tell renters to take the far end of the car park and walk. Marina ramps and tight U-turns need a moment of care rather than real worry, the steering is quick and the cameras are good. The front sits low, so speed bumps and steep ramp lips want a slow, square approach. The air suspension raises ride height when you need it, which helps on the worst of them.

The ride is firm. This is a sports SUV, and on Dubai's expansion joints and patched surfaces you feel more than you would in a softer luxury SUV. It's never harsh, but it's not a magic carpet either.

Heat, AC and the airport run

Dubai summer doesn't care how much a car costs. Park the Urus in the open at 45 and the cabin bakes like anything else. The good news is the AC is strong and the cabin, while wide, cools to comfortable within a few minutes of pulling away, with proper rear vents for back-seat passengers. Start it, get moving, and let the air do its job rather than expecting an instant chill the second you open the door.

For luggage, the 616-litre boot swallows two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags without fuss, which makes a DXB or DWC airport collection genuinely practical for two people travelling with full kit. Four adults plus four large cases gets tight, as it does in most cars this shape, so for a full carload pack soft bags and you'll be fine.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Urus if the trip is the occasion: a wedding week, a milestone, a stretch of Dubai where you want the car to be part of the memory and you don't flinch at the fuel bill. It delivers supercar pace, a cabin you can actually use, and a presence almost nothing else in an SUV body matches. If you mostly want a quiet, plush, do-everything luxury SUV for long highway hauls and easy mall parking, a Range Rover or Cayenne will cost you less to run, ride softer, and ask less of you in a tight bay.
