The engine, and how it drives

The XE runs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four making 250 hp and 365 Nm, sent through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels only. No all-wheel-drive version was ever sold here. Jaguar quotes 0 to 100 km/h in around 6.5 seconds and a 240 km/h top speed, numbers that live up to themselves on Sheikh Zayed Road, where the turbo pulls cleanly from low revs and there's always something left for a quick overtake. What actually sets the car apart isn't the number sheet, though. It's the steering. Jaguar tuned the XE to be the sharpest-handling car in this class, with quicker responses and more feedback than a 3 Series gives you, and a chassis that stays flat through a fast interchange instead of leaning and complaining about it. On a run out toward Hatta on a Friday morning, that difference is obvious inside the first few corners.

The honest caveat is the cabin around that drivetrain. This is a design that dates back to 2015 and was facelifted once since, so the touchscreen and menus feel a generation behind the newest Mercedes and BMW systems, and can lag when you're stacking commands. None of that changes how the car drives, which is really the only reason to book one over a newer, blander rival.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The 410-litre boot sounds fine until you put it next to the class it's competing in, since a 3 Series and a C-Class both carry noticeably more. In real terms that's one large hard case and a soft bag or two, loaded without a fight, which suits two people flying into DXB or DWC for a week and not much beyond that. Try to pack for four with a full set of check-in luggage and you'll be repacking the back seat to make it fit.

The back seat is where the size argument really bites. The wheelbase runs 2,835 mm, which sounds generous, but rear legroom in the XE has always trailed the class, and a tall adult sitting behind a tall driver notices it on anything past a short hop. Two adults in the back for a dinner run are fine. Four adults across a full week of daily use will find it tight, sooner than they would in either German rival. Treat this as a car for one or two people who care about the drive, not a family shuttle.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

A smaller cabin cools faster, and that's the XE's one genuine heat advantage. After a car park bake at 45 degrees plus, there's less air to chill, and the front vents pull the temperature down quickly once you're moving, with rear passengers getting their own vents too. Crack the windows for the first few seconds before you climb in, same as with any car left in the sun here, and give it a couple of minutes before you expect the cabin to feel normal.

Fuel economy runs around 11 km/l in mixed city driving with the AC working, and the 63-litre tank gives a real-world range close to 690 km, so a resident on the daily commute is looking at roughly one fill a week. It's happy on Special 95, no need for the premium grade. Two running costs land on you regardless of the car: Salik tolls on every gate you cross, and any RTA fines that come back to the renter. Your mileage allowance on this booking is 250 km a day, with extra kilometres billed at AED 0.5 each, generous enough for city use but worth tracking on a longer out-of-town trip. The one thing to respect is that 125 mm of ground clearance: normal speed bumps are no issue, but take a steep mall ramp or a sharp hump slowly and square-on so the nose doesn't scrape.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Jaguar XE 2025 if you're one or two people who actually enjoy driving and want something other than a 3 Series sitting in the hotel car park. A DIFC meeting during the week, a confident cruise down the E11, a weekend run toward Hatta or Jebel Jais: this is where the car earns the booking, and a discontinued badge in white still turns more heads at valet than either German rival manages.

Look elsewhere if you need to carry adults in the back regularly, want the newest infotainment, or are travelling as a family with a full set of luggage. A 3 Series or C-Class beats it on all three, and a mid-size SUV beats it easily if the trip is really about space.
