Some cars you rent to be seen in, and some you rent because the drive home turns out to be the best part of the day. The Jaguar XE 2024 sits firmly in the second camp. It's a compact executive sedan that lines up against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, and the reason to pick it is simple: on a good road it steers and settles better than either. Why you'd pick it over a 3 Series

The XE runs a 2.0-litre turbo four making 250 hp through an eight-speed automatic and the rear wheels. Jaguar rates the sprint to 100 km/h at around 6.5 seconds, which is enough to settle any overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road in a single clean move. Pace isn't the reason to book it, though. The reason is the way it steers. The XE has long been the sharpest-handling car in the compact executive class, with quicker, more honest steering than a 3 Series and a chassis that stays flat and composed when you lean on it through a fast interchange. At a 120 cruise on the E11 it feels planted and serious, and on a weekend run it's genuinely rewarding in a way the German rivals only hint at.

Rear-wheel drive is exactly right for Dubai's dry tarmac, and the turbo pulls cleanly from low revs so you're never left waiting for it. The honest caveat is the cabin. This design has been on sale a while, and the infotainment sits a step behind the newest Mercedes and BMW systems, with a touchscreen that can lag. Jaguar is also winding the XE down globally, so it's the older car on the shelf. Neither of those things changes how it drives, which is the whole point of choosing one.

Boot and back-seat reality

Two numbers decide whether the XE fits your trip, and both run against it next to the Germans. The boot holds 410 litres, usefully smaller than a 3 Series or a C-Class. In practice that's one large hard case and a couple of soft bags loaded in comfortably, which suits a couple on an airport run. Try to fit two big cases plus cabin bags for four and you'll be wedging things in. For a DXB or DWC pickup with light luggage it's fine. For a family's full week of cases, it isn't.

The back seat is the XE's real weakness. Despite a 2,835 mm wheelbase, rear legroom is tight for the class, and a tall adult sitting behind a tall driver will feel it on anything longer than a hop across town. Two adults in the back for a dinner run are comfortable enough. Four adults for a week of daily driving will find it cramped, and this is exactly where a 3 Series or C-Class pulls ahead. Rent the XE as a driver's car for one or two people, not as a family four-seater.

Heat, the cabin and running it

A smaller cabin has one clear upside in July. There's less air to chill, so the XE cools down faster after a spell in a 47-degree car park than any big saloon manages. The front vents hit hard, rear passengers get their own vents, and within a few minutes of pulling away it's comfortable. Park in shade where you can and drop the windows for the first few seconds to push the hot air out, as you would in any car here.

On running cost, the 2.0 turbo returns around 11 km per litre in mixed driving, a little less with the AC working flat out, and the tank holds 63 litres. Figure on roughly 600 to 700 km between fills, so a resident doing the daily office loop stops for fuel about once a week. It runs happily on Special 95, so there's no need to feed it the top grade. Two costs land on you as the renter whatever you drive: Salik tolls, which mount up if your route crosses the gates twice a day, and any RTA fines. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for each extra kilometre, which a normal city week won't trouble but an Abu Dhabi day trip can. As a premium car the XE may carry a refundable deposit, so it isn't a no-deposit booking, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys.

Size and parking are easy to live with. At 4,678 mm the XE is genuinely compact and drops into tight multi-storey bays and Marina ramps without fuss. The one thing to respect is how low it sits, at around 120 mm of clearance. Standard speed bumps are no problem, but take steep mall ramps and the sharper humps slowly and at an angle so the nose doesn't scrape.

Who should rent it, and who should size up or across

Rent the Jaguar XE 2024 if you're one or two people who care how a car drives. Client meetings in DIFC during the week, a quiet and confident cruise down Sheikh Zayed Road, a proper drive out toward Hatta or Jebel Jais at the weekend: it handles all of that better than anything else at this size, and it looks the part at a hotel valet without shouting about it.

Size across to a 3 Series or C-Class in two cases. If you regularly carry adults in the back, or if you want the newest cabin tech and a slicker screen, both Germans answer those better. Size up to a sedan with a bigger boot, or to an SUV, if your week is really about four people and a stack of airport luggage, because the XE's 410-litre boot and tight rear seat won't stretch to it. Book it for what it is, the driver's choice in the class, and a week with it in Dubai feels like a treat rather than just transport.
