Rent a Hongqi H9 2023 in Dubai and the honest first question is usually "what's a Hongqi?" Fair enough. Hongqi is FAW Group's state limousine brand, relaunched over the last decade as China's answer to Mercedes and BMW, and the H9 is the full-size sedan built to sit against an S-Class or a 7 Series on spec sheet and price. The engine, and how it drives

The H9 you're renting runs the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, the standard engine across the GCC range, making 245 hp and 380 Nm through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and the rear wheels. Hongqi also builds a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 for higher trims, but that's a different, pricier car, so don't expect the extra shove here. What you get instead is a competent, quietly quick executive sedan: 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds, a 230 km/h top speed, and enough low-end torque that merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or overtaking on the E11 doesn't need much planning. Rear-wheel drive keeps the front end light and the steering honest at speed, which matters more in a car this size than most renters expect. It won't out-drive a 7 Series or chase an S 500 through a corner, and Hongqi isn't pretending otherwise. What it delivers is the same relaxed, cushioned cruise the segment is built around, at a rate the German cars don't match.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

This is where the H9 makes its case. The wheelbase runs past three metres, and almost all of that length lands in the rear seat, which reclines, heats, cools and massages, with its own touchscreen controls built into the armrest. Two executives or a couple heading to DXB or DWC ride in something closer to a limousine than a rental sedan, and a stuck hour on Sheikh Zayed Road stops feeling like an hour. If you're renting this to move a client, a parent, or yourself in comfort rather than to drive it yourself, the back seat is the whole argument.

The boot is the honest caveat, same as with most full-size sedans built around rear-seat space rather than cargo. At 370 litres it takes one large case and a couple of soft bags comfortably, not three hard-shell cases for a family holiday. For an airport transfer or a business trip that's plenty. For a week away with four adults and a full load of luggage, look at an SUV instead.

Hongqi quotes a combined fuel figure of around 5.6 litres per 100 km for the 2.0T, which is optimistic for a two-tonne sedan running its AC hard in Dubai traffic. Expect real city driving to land noticeably higher than that. The 62-litre tank still covers a full day comfortably within the 250 km daily allowance, with room to spare, so you're not planning fuel stops around the rental. Salik tolls on every Sheikh Zayed Road pass and any RTA fines during your rental are yours to cover, as they are with any car here.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the H9 if the back seat is the point: airport transfers in real comfort, client meetings where the ride matters more than the badge, or you simply want to try a genuinely well-equipped luxury sedan without paying German brand tax. For that use it's a strong, honest alternative to an S-Class or a 7 Series, at a rate neither one matches.

Look elsewhere in three cases. If brand recognition matters to you or your guests, an unfamiliar badge means most people on the valet line won't know what they're looking at, and for some renters that's the whole point of a luxury car. If you want to drive rather than be driven, the H9 is competent but not exciting, and a German sports sedan will reward you more from behind the wheel. And if your trip means four adults with a week of luggage, the 370-litre boot is tighter than the car's size suggests from outside.
