Most pickups people rent in Dubai are work trucks first and everything else second. The Ford Ranger 2023 we hand over isn't that. This is the 3.0-litre V6 Raptor, a 292 hp twin-turbo petrol on full-time four-wheel drive, and we can have it at your door within one to two hours. The honest argument for this truck is that it's a desert and dune machine you can also live with on tarmac, not a load-hauler you suffer through the week. If you want a double-cab that takes five people, swallows a week of gear, and genuinely belongs off the blacktop past Al Qudra, this is the one. If you only need a big SUV for the school run, it's more truck than you'll ever use.
The Ranger Raptor is a full-size double-cab pickup, five seats, four doors, with a proper open load bed behind the cabin. At nearly 5.4 metres long and 1.92 wide it's a large vehicle by any measure, and the high stance makes that obvious the second you climb up into it. Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6, twin-turbocharged, making 292 hp through a ten-speed automatic and permanent four-wheel drive with selectable terrain modes. It clears 100 km/h in about 7.9 seconds, which for a truck this size and weight is genuinely quick.
The cabin is the part that surprises renters used to older pickups. It's wide, comfortable, sits you up high with a commanding view of the road, and the back bench has real adult space rather than the token rear seats trucks used to get away with.

This is where the Raptor earns the rate. The long-travel suspension and four-wheel drive mean it shrugs off the kind of soft sand and graded desert track that stops a normal crossover dead. With 234 mm of clearance and the terrain modes, the runs out toward Al Qudra and the dunes past Lahbab are exactly what it's built for. You still need to know what you're doing in deep sand and drop the tyre pressures, but the truck itself is more than capable. Most rentals in this city never leave the asphalt, so if you're not actually heading into the desert, you're paying for ability you won't touch. Be honest with yourself about that before you book.
A 292 hp petrol V6 is not a frugal engine, and there's no point pretending otherwise. Worked hard on the highway or in the sand it drinks, and city crawling with the AC fighting 45-degree heat won't help. The saving grace is the 80-litre tank, which is large enough that even with heavy consumption you get a sensible touring range and aren't stopping every afternoon. Dubai petrol stays cheap by world standards, so the cost per kilometre is far easier to swallow here than it would be almost anywhere else. The included 250 km a day covers normal use, and it's 1 AED per kilometre beyond that, which only matters on a long desert day or an Abu Dhabi run.
A truck this big asks for respect in the city. The tight bays in older Marina towers and the steep multi-storey ramps need real care, and there are bays you simply won't fit into, so plan your parking rather than assuming. On the open road none of that matters: on Sheikh Zayed Road it sits planted and overtakes with the V6 in reserve, and the high seat makes the wide lanes easy to read.
On the heat, the large cabin takes a moment longer to cool than a small car, but the climate system is strong and there are rear vents, so back-seat passengers aren't baking on a summer afternoon. Give it a minute moving and it pulls a sun-soaked interior down to comfortable. A few rules sit with you as the renter: Salik tolls charge to the account as you pass the gantries, RTA fines during the rental pass to you, and children under four need a child seat, which we can fit.
Rent the Ranger Raptor 2023 if you actually want what it does best: desert and dune capability with the power and the four-wheel drive to back it up, plus a double-cab that carries five and a week of kit. For a group heading out to the sand, or anyone who wants a genuine off-road truck for the trip, it's the real thing and a lot of fun on the way.
Skip it if your week is school runs, malls and airport pickups on tarmac. You'll spend more on fuel, fight for parking, and never use the off-road hardware you're paying for. For that, a mid-size SUV is cheaper, easier and just as practical. The Raptor is a specialist, and it's worth it only if you'll actually let it off the leash.
