Under the bonnet is the 2.3 litre turbocharged four, about 310 hp, sent to the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic. The turbo four sits lighter over the nose than a V8 would, so the car turns in cleanly and does not feel nose-heavy through a roundabout. Space for two, and where the bags go

What does need respect is the ride height. Ground clearance sits around 131 mm, so speed bumps and the steeper mall and tower ramps want taking slowly and at an angle, not head on.

When to drop the top, and how the AC keeps up

From around November through March you can run the roof down for most of the day, and it is genuinely one of the better ways to see the city. In peak summer, keep the top-down hours to early morning and after sunset. Roof up, the small cabin actually works in the Mustang's favour once temperatures hit the high 40s. There is less air to cool than in an SUV, so the front vents pull the temperature down fast once you are moving. The back seats get noticeably less airflow, one more reason they stay a short-hop proposition rather than a real second row. Park in the shade when you can, use a sunshade if the car is sitting for hours, and give it a minute with the doors open before you climb back in on an August afternoon.

Who it suits, and when to step up to the V8

This older shape has its own following in Dubai, and running the four-cylinder rather than the V8 keeps the numbers sensible for a week of city and highway driving.

Step up to the V8 if the exhaust note is the actual reason you want a Mustang. The 5.0 GT brings about 450 hp and a soundtrack this turbo four was never going to match, so ask what is on the fleet if that is the deciding factor for you. And if your week means four adults or a proper luggage load, skip both and take a sedan or an SUV, because the back seats and the firm ride will wear thin fast.

A few things to settle before you book. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you, and seat belts are required in every seat. The daily allowance is 250 km, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, and you need to be at least 21 to take the keys. As a sports car it rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, not a no-deposit deal. Get the engine choice right, keep the party to two, and this older Mustang is still one of the better-looking ways to spend an evening in this city.
