For a relaxed weekday commute and the occasional airport run, the Ford Fusion 2021 is the kind of midsize sedan that just gets out of your way, and we rent it across Dubai with payment sorted when we hand over the keys. Cards, cash, Apple Pay, Google Pay, even crypto and bank transfer all work on delivery, so there's no scramble at the desk. This is a comfortable, good-looking sedan with a roomy cabin and a usable boot. It's also a previous-generation car with an ordinary engine, and below we're honest about who should rent it and who should look at a newer midsize or a smaller sedan instead.
Think of the Fusion as a calm cruiser rather than anything sporty. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 175 hp through a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, which is enough to merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road without drama and settle into the fast lane at a steady cruise. Push it hard and the engine sounds busier than it feels quick. That's the trade. You get a big, quiet, softly sprung cabin and a car that's easy to drive all day, not a car that thrills.
Where it earns its keep is the long, dull stuff. Daily commutes, ferrying clients between meetings, a week of errands where you want the seat to still feel good after the fortieth red light. Five adults fit properly, with real shoulder room across the back and a flat-ish floor, which is more than most cars this size manage.

Yes, comfortably. The Fusion's boot is one of the better ones in this class, and a DXB or DWC run with two large hard cases plus a couple of cabin bags goes in without a fight. Two people travelling with a full set of luggage will have room to spare. A family of four heading off for a week is where it starts to get snug, so pack the back seat for the overflow if you're loading up four people and four suitcases.
The wide rear bench also makes this a sensible choice if you're carrying passengers more than cargo. Child seats clip in fine, and Dubai law requires them for under-fours, so factor that in if you're travelling with little ones.
Be realistic here. The 2.5-litre engine is not economical by modern standards, and in Dubai's stop-start traffic and constant AC load you'll see around 6 km/L in town. The upside is the 68-litre tank, which stretches to roughly 700 km of mixed driving before you're back at the pump. For a typical week of commuting you're looking at one fill, maybe two if you're doing daily highway runs out to the other emirates. Highway cruising improves the figure noticeably, so an airport-and-back day costs less fuel than a day of city crawling.
If running cost is your main worry, this is the honest sticking point. A newer midsize or a smaller sedan will drink less. The Fusion makes sense when comfort and space matter more to you than the fuel bill.
Park a dark-coloured Fusion in July and the cabin will be brutal when you get back in. The good news is the air conditioning has a big, strong system and a large cabin to fill, and it pulls the temperature down quickly once you're moving with the fans up. Front and rear passengers both get vents, so back-seat riders aren't left to suffer on a school run or a client drive. For the first minute or two, drop the windows and let the worst of the heat escape before the AC catches up. After that it holds a cold cabin easily, even at 45°C outside.
At just under 4.9 metres long the Fusion is a proper midsize, so tight multi-storey bays and a few Marina ramps need a bit of care, but the light steering and clear sightlines make it easy to place. Ground clearance is 152 mm, fine for speed bumps and mall ramps, not built for anything off the tarmac. It's a road car through and through.
A few Dubai basics worth knowing. Salik tolls are charged to you as the renter, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you too, so stick to the limits and watch the toll gates on Sheikh Zayed Road. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat. None of this is unique to the Fusion, but it's the stuff that catches first-time visitors out.
Rent the Fusion if you want a comfortable, spacious sedan for commuting and airport runs and you don't mind feeding it. It's a genuinely nice place to spend an hour in traffic, the boot handles real luggage, and the back seat fits adults without complaint. We'd hand it to a business traveller or anyone doing steady highway miles in a heartbeat.
Skip it if fuel cost is your deciding factor, or if you only need a runabout for solo city errands. In that case a smaller, newer sedan will do the same job for less at the pump. And if you specifically want the latest tech and best economy in this size, a current-generation midsize is the smarter pick. The Fusion's appeal is comfort and space at a sensible rate, not efficiency or novelty, so rent it for what it's good at.
