A BMW X6 M 2021 is a strange thing on paper. It's a two-and-a-quarter-tonne SUV carrying a 600 hp twin-turbo V8, dressed in the sloping roof of a coupe it doesn't strictly need. Rent one in Dubai and you get near-supercar pace in something that still seats five and swallows real luggage. Squeeze the throttle in any gear and the whole car surges forward with a shove that never seems to run out of road. There's a higher-output Competition version of this engine tuned to around 625 hp, but the standard X6 M and its 600 hp are already far more performance than Dubai's speed limits will ever let you use.

M xDrive puts the power down cleanly, so even a hard launch just hooks up and goes rather than lighting up the tyres. The flip side is the ride. This is an M car underneath, sitting lower and sprung far firmer than a normal X6, so patched side streets and expansion joints come through the seat. It's controlled and never crashy, but nobody would call it plush. You're renting the way it accelerates and holds a fast sweep of road, not a limousine hush.

The coupe roof, and what it costs you

Here's the honest part. The X6 M is mechanically an X5 M with a chopped, sloping roofline, and that roof is bought with space. Rear headroom is the obvious casualty. Two average adults fit in the back fine, but a tall passenger will find their hair brushing the lining, and the smaller rear glass makes the back seat feel darker and more closed-in than the upright X5. If your rear passengers are children or you're mostly two up front, none of this matters. For four adults on a week of evenings out, it's a real compromise.

The boot tells the same story. You get around 580 litres behind the rear seats, opening to roughly 1,525 with them folded, and the load bay is wide and usable. What you lose to the roofline is height, so tall or awkward items that would slide into an X5 have to lie flat here. Two large airport cases and a couple of soft bags load without a fight, which covers a DXB or DWC run for two. Pack for four with a full set of hard cases and it gets tight.

Size is the other thing to plan for. The 83-litre tank takes premium fuel and empties quickly under a keen right foot, so plan on stopping to fill up more than once across a busy week. The mileage terms matter here too. You get 4,500 km included over the rental, which is generous for city use, but the charge past that is a steep AED 12 for each extra kilometre, so it's worth keeping half an eye on the odometer if you plan long highway days. The cabin earns its keep in July. This is a large, well-sealed interior, so it takes a moment longer to pull down from a 48-degree afternoon than a small hatch would, simply because there's more air to move. The climate system is strong and gets there without drama, rear passengers get their own vents rather than waiting on cold air from the front, and cooled front seats take the sting out of hot leather in the first minute after you climb back in. Park in shade or a basement and the pull-down is quicker still. Inside, the quality is proper M-grade, with heavily bolstered sports seats and a serious driver's layout that feels special every time you get in.

Who should rent it, and who should size across

If you want the same 600 hp engine but more rear headroom and a taller, more practical boot, the X5 M is the identical car under a sensible roof and the smarter pick for four adults and luggage. And if you don't actually need the M performance, a plainer X6 gives you the same coupe style with a softer ride and much lower fuel bills. Go in with the terms clear.
