The look you're paying for

The Gran Coupe is long, low and wide, with frameless doors and a roofline that drops toward a short tail. It reads as a coupe that happens to have rear doors, and that shapes everything. The cabin wraps tight around the driver, the curved display runs the width of the dash, and the materials are the proper 8 Series grade rather than the softened version you get further down the BMW range. Four seats, and the front two are the good ones. The rear pair sit under that sloping roof, fine for two adults on a dinner run or a leg out to the desert, less so for tall passengers across a long day.

How it drives and gathers pace

A 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo straight-six sits up front making 335 hp, sent through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic to the rear wheels or xDrive depending on the car. It reaches 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, but the number undersells the feel. The six doesn't snap, it surges, building speed in one long smooth pull that suits a grand tourer far better than a peaky engine would. On Sheikh Zayed Road this is the car at its best. A run to Abu Dhabi or out to the east coast passes in quiet, planted comfort, and overtaking at 120 needs nothing more than a squeeze of your foot.

The 68-litre tank with a quoted 8.9 to 12.7 km per litre works out to roughly 830 km of range, and on a highway day you'll see the better end of that economy. A full day to the capital and back won't have you watching the gauge. City driving in summer heat with the AC pulling hard brings the figure down, as it does in any car this size.

The boot is the honest limit. At 440 litres it takes two large cases plus a couple of soft bags, which is right for the two people this car is really meant to carry. Load it with four adults' worth of full-size luggage and the sleek tail runs out of room fast. For an airport pickup with a full crew and all their bags, this isn't the car, and I'd steer you to something boxier. As a two-person tourer with space for the pair of you, it's well judged.

Parking, ramps and the heat

This is where the 840 asks for patience. Past five metres long and sitting low, it wants care in tight Marina bays and older multi-storey parks, and the cameras earn their keep. Clearance is the bigger watch-out. At around 124 mm the nose sits low, so steep mall ramps and the sharper community speed bumps need taking slowly and at an angle to keep the front clean. None of this matters on open road, which is rather the point.

Cooling is strong, which counts in a low car with a lot of glass that bakes when parked. The climate system drags a sun-soaked cabin down quickly and the front vents hit hard, so a minute with the doors shut is enough to make it comfortable even after hours in the sun.
