Land at DXB with a client meeting two hours out, and the BMW 740 2024 is the car that gets you there looking like you had time to spare. It's the newest 7 Series in our Dubai fleet, built on the generation BMW launched in 2022, and we get it to your hotel, villa or terminal usually inside one to two hours of booking. Two things decide whether it's worth booking over the rest of the range: whether the tech and the extra power under the bonnet actually earn the rental, and whether the mileage allowance fits how far you plan to drive it in a week. The badge gets you noticed regardless. What you get for the money is the real question.

What's new about this generation, and how it drives

BMW moved the 7 Series onto a new platform for this generation, badged G70, back in 2022, and the 2024 car in our fleet is that same generation rather than a facelift of the smaller-looking model it replaced. The clearest change sits up front: a taller, illuminated kidney grille and slim split headlights that read as unmistakably new next to an older 7 Series parked beside it. Underneath, this is the 740, the stronger of the two straight-six petrol versions we run, with 381 hp and 520 Nm from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six carrying a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Power runs through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels only, no xDrive on this one.

The extra output over the 735 shows up mostly in how relaxed the car feels at speed rather than in outright drama. It reaches 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, and on Sheikh Zayed Road that means an overtake happens in one unhurried pull instead of a kickdown and a wait. Standard air suspension keeps the ride settled over the patched sections of older roads, and the car sits noticeably flatter through a roundabout than its 5.4-metre length suggests it should. That length is the one thing to plan around: a Marina tower ramp or a tight mall bay wants a slower approach and a glance at the cameras before you commit to a space.

The back seat, and the tech that comes with it

The biggest change inside is the curved glass panel that now runs from the driver's display into the central touchscreen, replacing the separate screens the old 7 Series used. It's the same setup whether you're driving or being driven. An interaction bar of backlit crystal trim spans the width of the dash and doubles as a touch control for climate and ambient lighting, which sounds like a gimmick until you're using it one-handed at a red light.

The rear is where this generation's ambition really lands. Legroom is generous enough for a tall adult to stretch out fully without their knees near the front seatback, helped by the long wheelbase this body shares with the 735. Overhead, the optional Sky Lounge panoramic roof lights a pattern across the glass at night, and the optional theatre screen, a 31-inch display that drops from the headliner with its own streaming apps, turns a stuck-in-traffic hour into something closer to a lounge than a commute. Rear passengers get their own climate controls and vents, so back-seat cooling doesn't depend on what the driver sets up front, which matters more than any feature list suggests once the cabin has been sitting in a July car park.

The boot is the honest limit. At 540 litres it takes two large cases and a couple of soft bags without a fight, but there's no folding rear seat and no extra space to lean on. Fine for an executive trip or an airport run for two. For a family holiday with a week's luggage for four, it gets tight fast.

The mileage deal, and running it

The number worth noticing before you book is 400 kilometres a day, included in the rate. That's a genuinely generous allowance for a car in this class, well above what we give on some cheaper sedans, and it covers a run to Abu Dhabi and back or a full week of city driving without you watching the odometer. The catch is what happens if you go over it: extra kilometres cost AED 15 each, steep enough that a single unplanned detour past the daily limit adds up fast. Track your mileage if the week includes a long highway trip and you'll rarely notice the cap. Ignore it, and the overage bill can surprise you.

Running costs follow the same generous-with-a-catch pattern. BMW rates the 3.0-litre six at 7 to 8 litres per 100 km combined, and with a 74-litre tank that's close to 1,000 km on paper, though a week of Dubai traffic with the AC working hard pulls real-world range down into the 700s. Salik tolls on your route and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to settle, same as on any car here. Being a luxury sedan, the 740 takes a refundable deposit rather than the no-deposit option we offer on smaller cars, and you'll need to be at least 21 to collect the keys.

Who should rent it, and who should look either side

Book the 740 if you want the newest generation of 7 Series with real performance behind the badge, not just the badge itself. It's the stronger of the two straight-six petrol versions we run, quick enough to make overtaking effortless, and the rear seat and screen options genuinely change how a stuck-in-traffic hour feels. For airport transfers, client pickups or a week of being driven more than driving, it does the job better than almost anything else in the fleet.

Look at the 735 instead if the extra power isn't the point and a lower rental cost matters more. The gap in everyday comfort between the two is small. Look above it, at the V8 760i or the fully electric i7, if outright pace or a silent, chauffeur-grade experience is what you actually want. And if your week means seven seats or a family's worth of luggage, no sedan in this range solves that, however good the boot looks on paper. The 740 is at its best carrying up to four people in serious comfort, not hauling cases for a holiday.
