Two figures decide whether a BMW 520i 2023 rental works for your trip: 4,500 km built into the whole booking, and AED 2.0 for every kilometre after that. The allowance resets once, not every day, so a short stay barely dents it while a longer one takes some planning. We deliver the car to your hotel, office or apartment door, usually within one to two hours of booking, in grey. This is the G30-generation 5 Series in its last year with the four-cylinder engine before BMW moved the badge onto the newer G60 body, and it's built for someone who wants to drive through a week of meetings rather than be driven. The question this page settles is how far that allowance actually gets you.
Open the bonnet and there's a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, not a six, sending 184 hp and 290 Nm through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic to the rear wheels. It's the entry engine in the 5 Series line, and the numbers show it: 0-100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds and the car tops out at 235 km/h, neither of which will impress anyone stepping out of a 530i. What it delivers instead is composure. Merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road, holding 120 km/h on a run to the airport, pulling away from a light on Al Wasl Road, the gearbox shuffles through its ratios without drawing attention to itself, and rear-wheel drive keeps the chassis settled through the long curves near Downtown. Push it to overtake above 120 with a full cabin and there's enough for one confident move, not a string of them. Against its usual rival, the Mercedes E-Class, the 520i feels the sharper car through a bend, while the Mercedes rides softer. If you'd rather feel connected to the road than cushioned from it, that settles the choice.
The 530-litre boot takes two large hard cases and a laptop bag loaded flat, with room left for a suit bag across the back seat if you need it. That covers a business trip, not a family's holiday load. In the back, the 2,975 mm wheelbase gives comfortable rather than lavish legroom. One passenger travels easily on an airport run, two side by side works for a short hop across town, and a third across the middle is fine for ten minutes, not an hour. Anyone who wants the back seat to be the point of the car, rather than somewhere to sit occasionally, is better served by the 735i, which is built around rear-seat space in a way this sedan isn't. On the road, 144 mm of ground clearance takes speed bumps and mall ramps at a normal pace without scraping, though a tight multi-storey bay in Marina or DIFC still wants a slow, deliberate line in, given the car's near-five-metre length.

Do the math on that 4,500 km figure and it holds up well for most trips. Over a week you'd need to average around 640 km a day to touch the cap, which almost nobody manages inside the city even with an airport run or two thrown in. Stretch the booking to a month and the cushion narrows to about 150 km a day, still enough for routine hotel-to-office driving but tight if you're also making regular trips to Abu Dhabi or Sharjah on top of it. Once you're past the allowance, AED 2.0 per kilometre is a steep rate next to some of the mileage deals on our other cars, so a longer, higher-mileage booking is worth planning against the allowance rather than assuming it will sort itself out. BMW quotes combined fuel economy of 5.4 to 5.9 L/100km, and Dubai traffic with the AC working through a summer afternoon usually pushes that closer to 8 L/100km in practice. Even then, the 68-litre tank gets you close to 800 km before a fill-up. The automatic climate control and rear vents pull a parked cabin down fast once you climb back in from a 48-degree car park, and the back seat gets its own airflow rather than whatever drifts back from the front. As with any rental here, Salik tolls and RTA fines picked up during the booking are billed to you.
Rent the 520i if you're in Dubai for work, want to drive yourself rather than sit in the back, and are staying anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks where the 4,500 km allowance comfortably covers your driving. It looks right outside a client meeting, it's the sharper car to drive against the E-Class, and two people travelling with carry-on bags and laptop cases will find it easy for a week. Look elsewhere in three situations. If your stay runs a month or longer with regular intercity driving, the allowance and the AED 2.0 overage rate are worth checking against a car with a more generous mileage policy. If the back seat is really what you're paying for, the 735i is the better call. And if you're travelling as four adults with full luggage, a mid-size SUV suits the trip better than any sedan in this class. As a premium sedan, the 520i typically carries a refundable deposit rather than a no-deposit option, so budget for that alongside the rate. Your total allowance is 4,500 km for the whole rental, extra kilometres cost AED 2.0 each, and you'll need to be at least 21 to take the keys.
