The cabin is hushed, the air suspension smooths out broken tarmac and ramps, and the seats are the kind you don't want to get out of. After a week in a normal SUV, the difference in calm is immediate.

Then there's the engine. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 makes 550 hp, enough for 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and a 290 km/h top speed. In daily use that means a two-tonne-plus SUV that never feels heavy when you ask it to move. Overtaking on the E11 is a single, smooth surge with no drama and no downshift hunting. The eight-speed automatic is so smooth you rarely notice it working. It's quick the way a Bentley should be: quietly, without ever shouting about it.

Keeping a big cabin cool

In a Dubai summer this is the spec that decides comfort, and the Bentayga is well armed for it. The cabin is large, so there's more air to chill than in a smaller car, but the climate system is powerful and there are proper rear vents to keep passengers in the back comfortable on a long drive. Parked in open sun at 45 degrees it gets hot like anything, but run the fans up and it pulls down quickly and then holds an even, quiet temperature for hours. For arriving at an event looking and feeling composed, that matters as much as the badge on the grille.

Size, parking and the bumps

This is a big car, and you'll feel it. At 5.1 metres long and 2.2 metres wide it's a deliberate, careful park rather than a flick into any gap. Tight multi-storey bays and the narrower Marina levels need patience and the cameras, which are excellent. On the open road that size translates into a planted, stable cruise that shrinks a long drive.

The 180 mm of standard ground clearance, with the air suspension able to raise it further, clears Dubai's speed bumps and steep mall ramps without scraping. The all-wheel-drive system gives real all-weather security on a wet road or a graded track, but this is a road-biased luxury SUV. For soft dune driving you want a dedicated 4x4, not this.

Fuel, luggage and the running costs

That V8 is not shy with fuel. Expect around 11.4 litres per 100 km on a gentle combined run and noticeably more in city traffic with the AC working hard, so the 85-litre tank covers a week of normal driving with regular fills rather than one. If running cost is your worry, this is not the car to economise with.

The boot holds 484 litres, which is modest for an SUV this large, because much of the length goes into cabin space and that V8. Two people with large cases plus soft bags are fine, and an airport run for a family is comfortable, but it isn't the cavernous load bay the exterior suggests.
