How much EV range you really lose in Dubai summer heat

Pick up an electric rental in July, glance at the dash showing 450 km, and you would be forgiven for thinking that number is yours. It is not. Once the outside reading climbs past 45C and the AC is fighting to keep the cabin liveable, the range you actually get is a good chunk lower than the sticker. The question that matters is how much, and whether it leaves you stranded between chargers. The short answer is that you should plan around roughly a quarter less than the rated figure on a brutal summer day, sometimes more on the motorway.

Why the heat takes a bigger bite than you would guess

Two things drain the battery at the same time in a Dubai summer, and they stack.

The first is the air conditioning. Cooling a cabin that has been baking in the sun is the single largest extra load you put on an EV here. Independent testing has measured roughly a 17 percent range hit on a 35C day with the AC running, and at 38C and above the loss can climb past 30 percent. Dubai routinely sits well above those test temperatures from June through September, with car parks and roads radiating heat long after the sun drops.

The second is the battery itself. Lithium-ion cells like to live somewhere around 25C to 40C. Push past that and the car's own cooling system kicks in to stop the pack overheating, which is another draw on the same battery you are trying to drive on. So you are paying twice: once to cool you, once to cool the battery. That is why a hot day costs more range than the AC alone would suggest. Sustained heat also ages a pack faster, which is the reason you should never leave the car baking at a low charge if you can help it.

What the common rental EVs actually do here

Rated range numbers come from WLTP or EPA tests run in mild conditions. Treat them as a ceiling, not a promise. Here is the rough real-world picture for the EVs you are most likely to be handed in Dubai during summer.

  • Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Rated around 600 km on WLTP. On a 45C day with the AC working hard and some motorway running, plan for closer to 380 km to 430 km of usable range.
  • Tesla Model Y. Similar story, slightly thirstier than the Model 3 because it is heavier and taller. Expect roughly 350 km to 420 km in real summer conditions against its higher rated figure.
  • BYD Atto 3. Rated around 420 km WLTP. Mixed real-world driving already pulls that down to about 300 km to 350 km, and a peak summer day with constant AC trims it further toward the lower end.

One detail in BYD's favour: it uses lithium iron phosphate cells, which cope with heat and frequent charging a little better than the older chemistry. That does not buy you more range on a single charge, but it is a gentler car to live with in this climate.

The pattern across all of them is the same. Knock about 25 percent off the dash estimate as your working assumption on a peak summer day, and more if you are sitting at 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road, because high motorway speed costs range on top of the heat.

How to plan a summer trip around the real number

You do not need to be cautious to the point of paranoia. Dubai's charging network is dense, with more than 1,200 charge points across the city as of 2025, covering malls, petrol stations, hotels and even the road out to Hatta. The trick is to plan around the honest range, not the optimistic one.

  1. Halve the rated range for your safe planning figure on long trips. If the car says 450 km, treat 250 km to 280 km as the distance you will comfortably cover with AC and a buffer, then top up before you need to.
  2. Charge to 80 percent for daily city driving and only fill to 100 percent right before a long leg. Heat plus a constantly full battery is the fastest way to stress the pack, and the last 20 percent charges slowly anyway.
  3. Precondition the cabin while plugged in. Cooling the car on grid power before you unplug means you set off with a cold cabin and a full battery, instead of spending your first 20 km just chasing the temperature down.
  4. Park in shade or a covered structure whenever you can. A car left in direct sun loses charge to its own cooling system and forces the AC to work harder the moment you get in. Mall basements and covered hotel parking are your friends.
  5. Watch your speed on the motorway. Dropping from 120 to 100 km/h on a long run noticeably extends range, more so than most people expect, and the heat penalty makes that gap matter more here than in a cooler climate.

For a Hatta day trip or an Abu Dhabi run, this matters in practice. The drive up to Hatta is around 130 km each way from central Dubai, and the climb plus full AC will eat range faster than a flat city commute, so charge near full before you leave and use the chargers that now sit along that route.
