Every week someone calls to check whether the Atlas on our list is a different car from the Teramont, and the desk answer is no. Luggage is the other half of the sum. With all seven seats up you keep a boot that manages school bags and a grocery shop. Fold the third row and the load bay turns van-like, taking a family's cases and a stroller with the second row untouched. Seven people plus airport luggage in one vehicle is a genuine ask here, and this car answers it.
The week it's actually built for
The Atlas earns its keep on repetition. Weekdays it's the school run, the after-school circuit and the big shop, all done from a high seat with easy second-row access. Weekends it stretches out: the E11 to Abu Dhabi, the tarmac loop to Hatta, a beach day in Fujairah with the whole crew aboard. Depending on the car you'll get a strong turbocharged four or the 3.6-litre V6, and either keeps pace with fast Dubai traffic without straining.
Keep it on sealed roads and graded tracks. It's a road SUV, not a dune machine, and soft sand is a recovery job waiting to happen.
Width and thirst, the two honest costs
This is the caveat we give on the phone. The Atlas is a fraction under two metres wide before the mirrors, and you feel every millimetre in an older Marina or Tecom parking structure. Newer malls with generous bays are easy, but if your building's ramps are tight, budget a patient first week. Some regulars just hand it to the valet on days it isn't worth the squeeze.
Fuel is the second cost. A big, heavy three-row SUV drinks noticeably more than a Tiguan doing the same commute. If five seats genuinely cover your household, take the Tiguan and keep the difference. Rent the Atlas when rows six and seven are real people who travel with you, because then nothing smaller does the job.

Are the Volkswagen Atlas and the Teramont the same car?
Yes, they're the same vehicle wearing two names. Volkswagen sells it as the Atlas in North America and as the Teramont in the Middle East, China and several other markets, so both badges show up on UAE roads and rental fleets. Trim details vary slightly between markets, but the body, the three rows and the space are the same car. If you've been comparing an Atlas listing against a Teramont listing, you're comparing the car with itself.
Can the Atlas carry seven people and their luggage at the same time?
Yes, within honest limits. With all seven seats occupied you still have a usable boot for soft bags, backpacks and a grocery run, which most three-row SUVs can't claim. Seven passengers each with a full-size hard case is beyond any SUV this side of a van, so for a full airport arrival mix in soft luggage or fold one third-row seat if you're six. For day trips and school runs with a full house, it swallows everything without drama.
Will the Atlas fit in my building's parking?
In most structures yes, but measure your expectations in older towers. The car is nearly two metres wide before the mirrors, so tight ramps and narrow bays need slow, deliberate placement. The reversing camera and sensors do most of the work, and after a few days the size stops registering. If your building's parking is unusually tight, mention it when you book and we'll talk through whether this is the right car.
How much more fuel does the Atlas use than a Tiguan?
Noticeably more, so plan for it. It's a much larger, heavier vehicle, and the commute a Tiguan does economically costs more at the pump here, especially in stop-start traffic with the AC working hard. That's the fair price of a real third row and the biggest boot in our Volkswagen range. If you mostly drive solo or as a couple, it's the wrong tool and the Tiguan will do your week for less.
Is there really no security deposit when renting the Atlas?
Yes, really, we don't block a deposit on your card for this car. You book, show your licence and passport or Emirates ID, and the only card activity is the rental itself, with no held amount waiting weeks to release. Salik tolls and any traffic fines are settled against your booking at cost. It's one less thing tied up while you're travelling, exactly when spare card headroom matters.
