The honest caveat is the surface. Loose sand off the graded tracks will bog a low car quickly, so keep a two-wheel-drive sedan on the tarmac and firm ground only. If your plan involves driving onto soft dunes, say so when you book and take the right vehicle, because recovery out here is slow and expensive.

The route in, and what it costs

From Margham you have one practical spine into the city: the Dubai-Al Ain Road (E66) heading northwest, then onto Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), Al Khail Road (E44), or Emirates Road (E611) depending on where you are going. Reaching Downtown or DXB airport is roughly a 40 to 50 minute drive in normal traffic. Dubai Marina runs longer, closer to an hour, since it sits at the far coastal end.

Here is the part that saves you money. The first stretch out of Margham passes no Salik gates at all, so the toll meter only starts once you join the busy corridors near town. On Sheikh Zayed Road the gates you are likely to cross are Al Safa and Al Safa South. Routing through Business Bay involves the Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail. Each pass is AED 6 in the peak windows, 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, AED 4 off-peak, and free between 01:00 and 06:00. Sundays and public holidays are a flat AED 4 all day, and two linked gates within an hour count as a single charge.

Salik is billed automatically as you pass and passed straight on to you afterward at cost, with the gate and time shown. Speed and red-light enforcement in Dubai runs almost entirely on camera, especially on the long open E66 where it is easy to drift over the limit. Any fine that lands is passed on with a flat admin fee, the original notice attached, settled after the rental rather than guessed at upfront.

The right car for here

An SUV is usually the sensible call from Margham. The distances are long, the road out is fast, and a higher seat with proper aircon and luggage room suits a group heading to or from a desert camp. A mid-size like a Patrol, Prado, or Explorer covers the tarmac comfortably and handles a load of bags without complaint.
