The charges start when you head toward the coast or the centre. Drive up Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) for Dubai Marina, JBR, or Downtown and the Jebel Ali gate is the first Salik you cross, with the Al Barsha and Al Safa gates waiting further in. Each pass is AED 6 during peak hours, 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, and AED 4 off-peak, with no charge between 01:00 and 06:00. Sundays and public holidays are a flat AED 4 all day. Gates linked within the same hour count as a single charge, so a straight run into town isn't ten separate hits. For someone who lives and works inside DIP, Salik is often a minor line item rather than a real cost.

Parking out at your destination is the other half of the budget. DIP itself is mostly free surface parking, but the Marina, Downtown, and Mall of the Emirates sit in RTA paid zones or paid structures. Plan for that at the far end, not at home.
